Well I just put together my new machine last night. Here are the specs...

E6600
eVGA 680i
2GB Corsair Dominator PC 8500
Scythe Infinity

I am still using my BFG 7950GX2 from my old system until ATi releases their new card and then I'll decide which route I wanna go. I installed the new firmware release for the mobo right away so I wouldn't have to worry about any SATA problems. I was upgrading from a NF4 AMD system and I had a fairly new install of XP already on there so I tried to just uninstall the drivers and such and just install the new ones for the eVGA board. Worked like a charm. Just uninstalled the nVidia drivers and put the new ones on there. At this point I am still just running at stock. I wanted to tool around in some of my games and apps to see if I could tell the difference from my 3700+ SD. BIG difference! Anyways everything seemed fine and it was an easy transition.

My next thing I wanted to do is do a little overclocking. I booted up at first with it at 3.2 and got in and played some games and did some Pi benchmarks, and Sandra benches and was blown away at the difference the new stuff made. Seemed stable enough and I went ahead and bumped it up to 3.5 ran same tests. Everything still ok. I figured I was getting close to my max though after seeing the results others had gotten. Anyways before I went to bed I got it up to 3.55Ghz linked. I ran Orthos overnight and when I woke up I was still stable @ 7.5 hours. I am at work now and if everything is still stable by the time I get home I will bump up to 3.6Ghz and test again. I almost forgot how much easier Intel machines are overall than AMD. The new Intel was such an easy install. I went from UPS package to overclocking in 30 mins flat.

Does anyone have any advice or pointers of any kind that can help me get the best stable overclock on this new gear?

Well I got it to 3.6Ghz Orthos stable for 13 hours. Next thing I am gonna do is tweak the timings on the memory and get them a bit tighter.

Sounds like your conroe build has worked out quite well for you. My question to you though is; Do you not plan on doing a fresh install of windows? And how often do you, so to speak, "cheat the install" process? It just never sounded like a sound idea to me as far as stabliity goes.

Also its good to hear that your 680i is working out well for you so far but why buy a 680i if you have lingering thoughts of buying an ATI card? Unless of course your not into sli/x-fire.

I just wanted to see whether or not the system would be stable without reinstalling. So far so good. I have never tried it before so I thought why not. If I see stability issues I can reinstall of course.

As far as the ATi or nVidia thing I am really just in a wait and see mode. I don't see the need of having SLI 8800's or Crossfire R600's until I can see some performance numbers in games from the R600. More than likely if SLI is needed for me to get nice framerates in Crysis and UT 2007 then I will go nVidia. If the R600 is just really really fast and I can play everything fine with just one then I will go that route.

Unlike alot of people on these enthusiast boards I don't just buy SLI 8800 GTX's for the e-penis factor. If I need that kind of setup in order to run Crysis and UT 2007 @ 1920x1200 2-4xAA 8-16x AF then I will probably splurge and get SLI 8800GTX's or the refresher cards. It is important to me on those 2 games in particular that I can play them with all the eye candy as high as I possibly can push it and still get great frame rates with no dips. More than likely I will have to go SLI for that, but we haven't seen the R600 yet. It may have the kind of power to do everything I want.
