My new 5950ultra and cooling problems

I just put in a Leadtek A380 5950FX Ultra in my P4 3.06 system. The Benchmarks read good and some games are real smooth, but some games make it really hot. I was playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 with all the graphic options on high, and the temp sensor on the card began to beep. I don't have it overclocked and the temp was 87C! I have 2 case fans as wll as the 450W PS fan. I took the side cover off and it was the same. I touched the card and it was VERY HOT! I understand that the cooling fan has two speeds, the higher one rather loud. Mine never goes to the higher speed. When I touched the card, I heard the fan spin very fast and loud for a second or two, then return to slow. There has to be something wrong there.
Even more disturbing is how the game played. It was choppy and hard to play. You would see the golf club begin to move and then the ball was gone already. Sometimes when it is doing this, the sound stutters too. A 3.06ghz system with 512mb RAM and a $400 video card should play smooth on whatever game at whatever settings, should it not? The CPU temp was never over 60C. I was getting low frames rates during a intense "Call of Duty" scene.
So should I just exchange this card for one with a working cooling system, or should I chose something else for gaming? Would the heat be responsible for the stuttering?

I already yanked it out and put back the 4600Ti I had before. I had to steal that back from my 11 year old and put back his 440MX in his rig. He wasn't happy about it.
Newegg had an online RMA that shows a 15% restocking for returns or send it in for repair. Those are the only 2 choices! I have only had it for a few days. I don't want a repair.
After all this, I think I could find a better way to blow $400 on my PC. Maybe I should ask for 9800 AIW in exchange? I could make some video discs for the kids to watch in the car with that(they only look good on a 7 inch screen).

Well I got my replacement card and installed it. I used the 53.03 drivers and started golfing again. This time it seems I can hear the GPU fan speed up when I start, BUT it still acts up. After 10-15 minutes the GPU temp is over 90 degrees Celsius. The game starts stuttering and there starts to some artifacts on screen like colored pixels or something. I have a case fan as well as the 400W PS one. My CPU runs pretty cool so I don't think it is really hot in the case.

Any ideas?

GJ nvidia!

Call up newegg about the restocking fee. When something goes that horribly wrong, they won't charge it. They're very nice people.

Get a well engineered ATI 9800P instead, only $220 as well.
 
yea u shoulda got a 9800pro 128 or a 9800pro 256 thats really an XT.
 
well remember the threshold of the CPU temp is something crazy like 140C (which isn't real but maybe 100 is the max before meltdown)
 
theoretically, damage should not occur until the silicon gets soft... which is way higher than that. when there is a malfunction in a part, a spot temperature may shoot way higher than that and kill the chip.

I don't think throttling kicks in until what... 75°C?
 
I understand that nothing actually melts or burns at 90c, but then why does it start perfroming poorly? Stuttering, artifacts, etc at high temps?

you sure your power supply is feeding into the card? it may be a tad loose and not getting all the power it needs (happend to a friend).
 
If it gets over a certain temperature, the chip start making mathematical errors, though they aren't physically fatal.

Again, I congratulate nvidia on their brilliant engineering.
 
I like hot rodding as much as the next guy, but I am not upgrading the cooling on a stock board! I could have bought a cheaper model then overclocked and cooled it.
Funny, the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 is the game that stesses it most. I tried Call of Duty, and BF1942, both on max detail and resolution, and they don't make it that hot. Hell, my Ti4600 plays the golf game in full detail better than this.

I hope NewEgg helps me out. They did send me a replacement right away, but now I guess I need to chose a different card, if they let me.

I think we found the problem.
Increase your case cooling.
ive got my 5900nu running a shit load father than a 5950 stock and the temp never gets above 53c no matter what im playing.
 
I've got a 9800PRO in a customer box, with a zalman heatpipe cooler, and only one case fan. Works great.... and extremely quiet.
 
I put a Zally on mine and did a lap dance on my GPU, Dropped the temps from around 70c to 36c at idle and 25c room temps

It would help if room temps were included when stating comp temps.
 
yeah, it got hot, but according to my temp probe, never went over 50°C. I had a thermister based probe on there (proven accurate within .5°C) and it seemed fine. It had one 120mm fan at 8v in it.
 
I would guess there's something wrong with the card(s). My 5900nu clocked at 470/975 never exceeds low 60's under full load. My case has a 92mm fan and a slot blower in addition to the PS. I would just get a different card altogether. 400 is way too much for any 5900 based card.
 
Well I sent the second one back to Newegg and the gave me a full credit! No restocking fee! Those guys are awesome. Ususally you have to decide on best price or best service, Newegg gives both!

I guess I need an ATI product now. What would be a good step up from a Ti4600? I'm thinking 9800pro

RMA that thing:p You shouldnt have to chuck 50 fans in your case just to keep a stock card cool:rolleyes: Get the 9800AIW you will be much happier its quiter cooler an doesnt need 50 fans to stay cool;)And an added bonus is it plays the new DX9 games much better and in PS2.
 
when i had the stock cooler on my bfg 5900nu in my other case with bad cooling that puppy would get to about 86C. it would still run great at that temp without any artifacting. and that was oc'd on the core to 475mhz. now it gets to 42C on the watercooler:D
