My new 4400+ fried?

As I removed the heatsink and fan from the Athlon 4400+ PIB box, it (thermal paste) stuck to a piece of paper, and I removed the paper. There was a slight impression of the corner of the paper in the thermal paste - SLIGHT. I thought no biggie - So I setup everything else on my MSI Neo4 mobo and got ready to fire it up. POWER ON...

All fans are going.
Display powers, but is dark.
Motherboard lights up.
All drives light up.

Those of you familiar with MSI, I have a D-bracket/USB outlet. It is uses 4 LED's for diagnosing system issues. All four red LED's light up indicating: System Power On, The D-LED will hang here if the processor is damaged or not installed properly.

Did I just toast a 4400+? (please tell me no.)
Does anybody have any ideas? I will name my firstborn after you.
What is everybody's experience with AMD's warranty.
What does it take to fry a chip?

thx.

lol

anyways, check if ur cpu is seated correctly and it's better to scratch the paper off the heatsink even it's too little. Also i don't think ur cpu got toasted.

from my experience a lot

try taking apart the rig completely, put it back together.
make sure there are no shorts, all the cables are hooked up, and the heatsink is properly installed (there should be directions at amd's website i can hunt down if you're at a loss here)

if that fails, check the manual on how to clear the bios if you don't know how to already, and do so.. maybe that'll clear an improper setting that got in there somehow :D

it could be simply that you need a bios update to support the proc.

or as the other guys said, reinstall everything again .....

still going strong ;)

thanks for the tips, I am going to re-install everything back into the case.
If the proc. wasn't seated correctly, how long would it take to fry after pushing Power On?
Each time I tested it, I didn't leave it on for more than 10 secs.

back in 2000 my friend built his Athlon 900Mhz. He wanted me to come around and set up the bios for him and stuff. I turned the PC on for the first time and it went to the bios screen. Then i heard a crackle and the screen went black.

I took off the heatsink to find he left the plastic cover on the thermal pad. Imprinted on the red plastic was the serial no. etc to the CPU. He sent it back to the supplier and they check it over and sent him a new one. There was no visual damage to the chip lol!

Sure hope you aint done that!
