got my HD280pro's today, never had sound like this before. only complaint is finding out exactly how bad the record quality is on like 40% of my music. oh well, movies, games, and the remaining 60% of my music now ROCKS!!! thanks for the good advice guys!
 
my most recent (in the last six months or so) encodes are all 192kpbs mp3's using winamp cd ripping software and they all sound great. the ones that don't sound so hot are about half of the 128k that were acquired from... various sources. my encodes sound fine though.
 
MP3's suck to begin with, it is a horrible format as is it not lossless.

depends on the psychacoustic model. PS AAC can do wonders for low bitrate encoding.
 
Isn't flac and all that just a recoded wav? I'll be doing some research over the next few days... All these encoding procedures, don't they make the file huge? Isn't that defeating the purpose of MP3's? I HATE wma's (don't work in my car mp3 player)... so don't even recommend wma lossless.

I need my mp3's to sound awesome... but stay mp3's!
 
god 128bit sounds like SH1T....even on crappy 5 dollar sony's... hehe.
 
--alt-preset extreme (avg rate 230) Insane is just too bloaty. VBR will save you some filesize.
 
really i've been doing 192 CBR and they seem fine, 256 is gonna eat some drive space, i keep all my music on my lappy which only has a 60gb hard drive
 
Rip with EAC, encode with lame using alt-preset standard or extreme, best sound you get get with sane file sizes. 99% of the time I can't tell the difference between them and CD's, even with good stereo equipment.
 
I think some of you guys are exaggerating a bit. 90% of my music is 128k oggs, as most of my CDs are stuck in another country and I can't re-rip them. Do my 10% FLAC rips sound better through my HF-1s? Yeah...a bit. Do the 128k oggs sound like shit? Uh, no. They sound fine.
 
Not sure why you guys stomp on mp3s so much, or even 128kbps,

first things first
winamp totaly sucks for ripping cds, grab a free cd ripper trial and see the difference,
second, I did some testing

Ripped a moist song to wav with a good CD ripping program
encoded 128kbps
encoded 320kbps

Ripped the same song with winamp and encoded in winamp to 192? i think was max
anyways

the properly ripped one, wav, 128, and 320 kpbs were VERY close, between the 320 and the wav no difference, between the 128 and the 320 slight difference, I even opened the files in an audio editer to see the difference the encode actually made , and it was minimal, even at 320 vs 128,

the winamp ripped, wav and mp3 sounded like shit, =p
tested them all with an A2 ZS and Senheiser HD520s

Yup. With EAC this is great. I have toyed with FLAC but the size is too much for large collections.
