This has been my primary hard drive for 8years - holding my OS and non-commonly used programs. It is still in it's original Gateway2000 G6-300XL case (curently a xp3200+ x850xt pe system)

"They sure don't make them like they used to!"

or...

"Who says IBM drives aren't reliable?"

This has been used in my primary system for 8 years to hold my OS, and misc programs. All entertainment software & firefox are run off a different drive, and all temp files on a third.

So oddly enough, I'm not currently inclined to replace it. Am I wrong?
From my understanding, the only performance increase will come at bootup, when using programs that I rarely use - and start up of games for loading directx fucntions and such?
Tests have shown that even with solid state drives, WindowsXPsp2 is still going to take x number of seconds to boot - so not saving a ton of time.

I'd say leave it untill it dies. Since its just holding your OS, it's not a big loss condisidering that you can just reinstall it.

If it's working, leave it alone. We all know what can happen when we start monkeying with things.

I got a drive that's about 10+. It has alot of space too, 130mb. That was a lot in windows 3.11 days

8.3MB/s?

...

So what is your boot up time?

edit: Ten hours later...are you still booting? :p

Wow PIO1? :D Holy crap man!

If you are feelling brave you might try using Ghost to do a disk to disk image of your Windows install to a new drive. It won't alter anything on the old drive and at worst the new drive won't boot.

As for old HD's, I still have a 10GB Hitachi that I bought back in `98 for my 300A rig. It's seen all sorts of abuse. The worst being spending the last year in the attic going from below freezing to well over 120F! But it just keeps on going.
