is it plugged in the right way? may sound dumb but it happened to me with my sister's cell phone just the other day.

I plugged it in, didn't auto-detect, couldn't figure out why. Turns out the USB cable would plug in both ways (which I'd never seen before) and when it was in "upside down" it would only act as a charger for the phone, wouldn't connect to the PC.

Try plugging her camera into your PC. If it doesn't auto-detect on yours either, then the cable is probably messed up.

If it does, then something is messed up with her USB ports.

speaking of which, her shuttle has problems with usb ports somewhat, mouse dosent perfer usb port.......if they are broken, are they replaceable? or if i find one that works can i get a break out usb box and those will work fine?

In some cameras there is a menu setting that allows them to be more compatable with windows auto detection... called PTP i believe. See if it is an option- and if so ... use it!

sometimes i have to connect my cam and reboot. for some reason when i take it off the PC with it running it wont auto detect when i plug it back up.

Make sure you try different ports. my card reader and mouse won't work on one set, but work just fine on the other.
