My friend has a Dell Dimension 4550 and its not booting up. Supposedly it was working fine just last week...today he goes to boot it up and nothing.

The "DELL" screen pops up and he can get into the BIOS. But after that the computer doesnt do anything. The Hard Drive doesn't sound like its spinning up either.

Any suggestions?

Take out the hard drive and make it a slave in your system to see if it can be read. He may have a bad drive. You also could make a diagnostic floppy and boot from it. Get them from the drive maker's site.

its not always possible that he may have a dead drive, does the dell bios screen go away?, do that black blank screen come up with the flashing _ thingy?

It will go past the dell screen to the black screen with the flashing "_" and then just restart on its own.

Downloaded the diagnostic for him to try and he's running it right now...

In case it helps this is the HD description from DELL.
