My friend says if you want to play a game and have a really good processor, you dont need a good graphics card to run the game smoothly. He says your cpu will compensate for the poor graphics card making the game run fine.

I believe this is total crap, can someone tell me if he is right?

Bottom line is, he says the cpu makes up for the lack of power from your graphics card...

i think it all depends on the video card and cpu. if u have onboard video, and a decent cpu, it is still not going to be enough to play FarCry maxed out.

I am koo koo.

your friend is me.

see where i am going with this?

get him/her to buy a dual processor machine with a 16meg graphix card and try to play Doom
(Doom 3!! not doom 1,2 ;) )

That is simply not True, You cant have a Top of the Line Overclocked Athlon FX55, and have a Voodoo4 and expect to play any game decently.

However the Opposite is somewhat and sometimes true. You can have a Medium CPU, say a Athlon XP 2500+ or Northwood 2.4Ghz CPU and a Top of the line video card say a x800 AGP and run alot of games great. At least extremly playable.

QFT.
This is why there is such a fuss about SM 3.0 and DirectX 10 support.

Have your friend bench his rig, then take out AGP card and throw in an AGP voodoo.
Whats your friend got to say to that?

yep, friend is talking out of his ass.

To talk in some brief watered down technical terms, the latest GPUs have a larger transistor count than todays processors. ALL of those transistors are devoted to one thing, pure pixel crunching. There is simply no substitute for a good GPU, because the CPU still has to deal with AI and Physics and whatnot, having to do GPU functions to brings it to its knees rather quickly.

A car with a great engine...but square wheels is much worse than a car with a little engine and nice big round wheels :)

This is what he says....

"The worst your video card is, the greater your cpu will have to be to compensate "

I aksed him this question....
"So if the worlds fastest super pc that has 32*1024 processors, ran half life 2 with a geforce 3ti200, it would run the game perfect?"

He said "yes because the cpu is so fast, it will compensate for all the lack of power the video card has" "you definately wouldnt may not see some effects but you would be able to get good framerates"

Is this true?

Nope. The game isnt meant for software accelleration. Its meant totally for hardware acceleration. If he means games that are 6 years old running software accel, he may have some legs to stand on, but take Tribes1 for example. Run that game in software mode on todays top of the line proccie. It will look like crap, but be playable. Your friend is talking about DOS days dude.... DOS 6.22 days.... or win3.1...

>> he's got rectal-cranial inversion syndrome
LOL I like this line :)

I agree w/ what everyone has said: Games designed for 3d acceleration need a decent 3d card to work.

For a real-life modern (in PC games) example:

Find a 1ghz p3 or athlon system with a gfti4600 or something and a top of the line p4/amd64/fx/ee chip and run them side-by-side. UT2k4 (or demo if neither of you have the game) has an option for software rendering. Put the highest CPU in software mode and put the 5 year old PC in hardware mode. He will have lag on the opening screen. if he still doenst get it, do a quick DM vs him.
