I did it guys :D My first successful IHS romoval on a 775 soldered on chip :D My L629A E6300 was the donor

First i did the norm of cutting all the silicone off the ihs, then i setup the 4 razors so they overlap each other and give pressure to the chip. then set it on two glasses (on the razors edge) so that when the solder melted the chip would fall. Then used a small butane mini torch to heat the ihs qickly and it dropped. Cleaned off the solder with my fingernail and a razor and plopped it back in. Used to idle @ 33c now down to 28-29c

I would assume this is going to allow a better seating surface for the heatsink?

Could this also be done on an 805d?:D
 
Is there a risk of crushing the core? Did you get all of the solder off of the core? What are the temp diff before and after?
 
im sure there is a risk as there always is, the hold down bracket has to come off. The solder is very soft and will come off with a fingernail but i used a razor to make sure it was clean. The temp difference was between 3-5c
 
Great work :) Just as a heads up, the ihs on the new E4300 is not soldered, you can just cut the seal around it and pop it off :D
 
nice work! have any advice on what to use for a shim? I'm lacking a bit of creativity right now

Sweet job man, is there any risk of overheating the core when trying to melt the solder? I guess if you do it quick it would be ok.
 
All the L2 IHS arent soldered on... Im using a custom water setup so a fusion block is on it ATM and i needed to remove the hold down bracket from the socket so only my block is holding the chip in
 
That is really cool. I'd do it myself if I wasnt so attached to my 6600 hearing what the latest 6600's are like in OC land. Anyone ever figure out what the thermal resistance of that solder is? How thick would you guesstimate that lump is? Are you going to use the stock D-Tek springs or keep the pressure on the lighter side with the bare die?
 
all the stock springs and everything are on the fuzion. It was actually real easy, i was expecting a harder fight

There's more of a risk you'll rip the core off if you don't correctly execute the procedures to pull it off.

Btw, how is the heatsink placement? I've heard a lot of people have problems trying to get the heatsink to even contact with the chip and have to modify their socket bracket to make it all sit well.
 
my cores are about 3 degrees off but they were the same temp off witjh the ihs on so i got lucky

Heres my watercooling, little rough as it took only 5 min from planning to execution. It was taken right after filling so the color of the water is different, its now a solid blue

I used to have a radiator setup almost precisely like that. The tubing was in the same spot, and it was a 3x120mm radiator. The difference was that instead of those white risers I used one of these...

mounted over the top fan exhaust hole to raise the central fan (and therefore the whole Radiator setup) off the top of the case. It may not be quite as secure as your setup, but it is a heck of a lot prettier. Especially since the wires for the fans could all be hidden inside the radbox.

Very cool, it takes lotsa balls, or just plain crazyness (I fall in the crazy enough to do it, not the ballsy enough to do it catagory:p)
