My First Build: help/suggestions

you know its funny, i watched a re-run on Jesse James "Motorcycle Mania" and in it he talks alot about working with copper and how hard it is. Here i am the next day cutting copper.

Yeah so i totally butchered my HSF. Ill post some more pics tomorow.

yes i know i need a new tv stand. the one im using is from my 20 year old tv, hah

some more pics here. The case is nice, but I thought the fron panel was raw steel or aluminum. Its actually plastic. Il'l probably paint it high gloss black along with my dual format HD optical drive when I get it. The PSU fits fine but its in an awkward position. The cables have to take an immediate bend to get through the "cable slot" i couldnt even use the short cable kit in alot of instances. The HSF isnt pretty anymore but it kept my CPU under 51c through 12 hours of Prime95 (case fans at medium, these fans make plenty of airflow). hopefully its doesnt go up too much when I take it from 9x266 to 9x333.

Well m atx boards are usually 9.6inches, and then looks like the case has like 4mm in between the mobo and the wall right there, so ya it will fit.

im annoyed.

I cant install vista ulitmate 64. i get this message "A required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing. if you have a driver floppy disk, cd, dvd, or usb flash drive, please insert it now. NOte: If the windows installation media is in the cd/dvd drive, you can safely remove it for this step." and it ask me to load a driver. tried a few things but not sure what to load. been searcing about it for the last few hours and all i get is this complicated, time consuming shit about modifying boot.wim and install.wim....fuck....

so 51c is hot huh, well it was reaching 70c when it was open bench and stock HSF, what should i do? probably didnt do the best job of thermal greasing...oh yeah and they are stock clocks

I was going to get the 2900pro but ive decided to wait for the 8800gt, sorry, im anxious too

Um did you try to put the mobo cd in when it ask you that? Maybe some other driver disks?

Also it was a good choice to go with a 8800gt!!!

How much artic silver 5 you put on it? most people say a little rice of it will do, maybe 3/4 of a rice, thats what i use.

yeah, i tried that eventhough it needs the driver for the cd/dvd. I dont htink it could get the driver from the dvd when it needs the driver for the dvd drive. im going to try updating the chipset driver, see what that does.

oh and i pretty much emptied out the tube of thermal grease that came with it the zalman...whoops

It asked for the drives drivers? well go on another pc, and get the drives drivers of the net and write them to a cd. Try that.

Omg are you serious?
Never use that much, and also never use thermal grease that comes with the heatsink, always use artic silver 5. Your temps will drop like A bombs

thanks for the help. I must be an idiot cause i cant seem to find the drivers i need.

This is the message it gives me:
Load Drivers

A required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing. if you have a driver floppy disk, cd, dvd, or usb flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the windows installation media is in the cd/dvd drive, you can safely remove it for this step

From what i can find this means my IDE controller, jmicron, ATAPI, SATA controllers. Where can I get these drivers. I DLed this from the Intel website http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...64-bit+version&lang=eng&strOSs=162&submit=Go!. But im not sure if this has whati need. It seems the ATAPI driver is the key driver i need. Im pretty sure they have to be .inf files or somehting. I dont beleive ill be able to run a exe.

Thanks

ok so after trying everything else i could think of, i finally went ahead and followed these steps: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2263381&SiteID=17

didnt go so smoothly at first. alot of the the unnecessary drivers i tried to "inject" would make the process hang. so i just started to the process over and over again and everytime i saw which .inf(driver) file caused it to hang, I took that .inf file out and started the process over again. once it finally went through i figured it wasnt going to work since i left out alot of the drivers. but it did finally at 3am. (i used the jmicron ide driver, and i few of the .inf files extracted from the intel link i posted previously.

and of course comcast fucks up last night leaving me with no internet or cable, luckily i could access that site offline

yeah its running fine now. Just waiting for the 8500gt and some arctic silver 5 so i can really start setting this thing up. in the mean time ill study overclocking and the g33-ds2r thread

ok, so im going to re do my thermal paste job with arcitc silver 5.

-Im going to take out the processor (didnt take out the cpu when i went from stock HSF to Zalman, cleaned the die while still locked down in board) and clean it really well.
-Install back into the mobo.
-apply a rice grains worth of AS5.
-spread it around evenly and thinnly as possible
-clean the zalman
-reinstall zalman, try not to move the zalman once its placed on the die (this seems near impossible for me to do)

-is it ok to spread the paste around with my finger wrapped in saran wrap?
-can i put a very thin (thin as possible on the zalman and cpu) layer of paste on the zalman?
-is touching the heatsink with my bare hands a problem (except for where the cpu contact is of course)?

-Oh and one other thing, what the hell do i do with the I/O panel? am i supposed to bend back the parts that are already bent or something, or do i just leave it the way it is?

thanks

Ok remember just one rice grain, and yes you can put just a little on the heatsink, but not too much or it will be an overkill and make the heat. Yes you can touch the heatsink and the base of it. And its better to use saran wrap. Also what exactly is wrong with the I/O plate?

nothing is wrong with it, im just not sure how its supposed to function. i installed it, and i was just wondering what i do with the "tabs" surrounding each input. am i supposed to bend those tabs or just leave it the way it is? I bent mine back because i felt like it wasnt going to clear some of the inputs. I understand if im not clear. Its fine and not really causing a problem, just curious for future reference.

Man thats a sick ass system, 8800gt looks awesome!! But wheres the dvd drive? And maybe try and clean the wires up. So what are the temps with the articsilver 5?

took out the drive because it was hard for me to hook up my IDE with the video card in the way (it was already very tight, plus ill have a sata dual format HD drive soon). another prob with the case is that the PSU is like 2 inches longer than the stock one. this makes the psu very close to the optical bay, which requires the wires to make a pretty tight bend

You should look into the sata dvd burners, I think they are smaller too. Can we have some more porn of your case and setup? Man cant wait to build my new case in shop class, it will hopefully put me back into m atx.

The outside of the case, your setup like your tv and pc and desk or whatever your using. And that would be good, also some temps too.:D

once i get a nice TV stand ill be sure to do that, right now its just embarrassing. Here is a screen shot i just took. I have the AS5 but havent applied it yet. Ill do it once my optical comes in.CPU-Z says my "core voltage" is 1.216 and sometimes it flips to 1.232 (its been at 1.216 for a while now though) even though my BIOS has it set to 1.3250. I tried about 3 diff voltage settings and they all would have that same reading in CPU-Z. Is that normal? This is on Vista 32-bit.
