I have decided that I am going to begin work on my very first mod. I am a little stuck as to where to begin. You guys are pretty seasoned at doing this sort of stuff so I thought I would seek some suggestions. I have some ideas but I don't know what I have to do first. Help point me towards the right direction.

I don't have a huge budget for this case but I am going to have to spend SOME money. I have a fully working system in an Antec Lanboy case (pretty respectable guts) but I want to put my stuff in a big ass case and make it look cool. So, instead of tear apart this nice aluminum case which works well enough for toting around a lan machine in, I thought I would use an old case I inherited from a friend some time back. Not to mention I don't want to try out my first mod on a $100 case and end up having 2 fugly boxes. :) This case is big, beige, and ugly. I'll post some thumbnails here and when I find some hosting, i will link to some nice big images I took. You can get a pretty good idea of what I am working with here. From the small thumbs.

It is basically the size of the old AT full towers (its BIG). Its a good 6inches taller than the full server towers that antec have. I like it. Its intimadating :), but it needs a little loving to bring it back to life.

There are a few things "wrong" with it that I will need to be fixing. I don't know exactly what I should do to fix them, but I am sure you guys have plenty of advice how to handle it.

Those are the images. I will post a few more in a reply message. What I deffinatly need to know before doing anything is get a financial question out of the way. Taking into consideration the size, how much paint will this case take to get fully covered? I don't want to end up spending like $100 on paint. If that is the "case" then maybe modding isn't quite for me yet.

Also, do you guys think this is going to be a "workable" platform?
 
Also, the holes were not cut by me, they were from the previous owner. They are not the cleanest cuts in the world but deffinatly not the worst. The ones on the side panel are 2 60mm (ugh!) and 2 80mm. The two on the top are 80mm. I don't know exactly how to handle that situation yet. I am thinking about a big window on the side so those would all just be hacked off. The top ones wouldn't be too hard to cut to 120mm I imagine.

I have a drill but no dremmel. I am guessing that will have to be my first purchase if I plan to do any moddnig at all. It seems to be the golden spike for all modders. It's what holds the whole operation together :)

Everything is a workable platform for a modder, that's the point, but i can't really tell much from your pictures, they are too tiny.
And paint, ranges, spray paint is cheap, and auto paint is expensive, you can make any paint job look good with the right amount of sanding and priming.

i think you should def go with the window idea to get rid of the 60mm holes. you could cut a 120 into the window as well. the inwin is a great platform for modding.
 
well your photos give me hope. that appears to be a near identical version of the case I have. just knowing its an "inwin" helps me out a bunch hehe. seems this case was fairly popular at one point.

how much would you guestimate you spent on the paint job? not exactly the color I would choose but a damn fine job at any rate.

I have a RTX from black and decker on the way which i just ordered from amazon.com .... should be here in a few days. In which time I am going to get started.

damn when i first saw that case i didnt htink there was much you could do but then when i saw the second one i had to do a double take to make sure it was the same case! damn now i can think of so many possabilaties for that case!
 
To fix the holes (make them larger) cut a square piece of metal about 5"x5" and hold it to the inside of the small 60mm holes already there. Using a pencil mark the 4 screw holes already there. Pre-drill these 4 holes on your 5x5 piece of metal w/ I believe a 3/16" bit. (double check that info)
Put the 5x5 back up behind the 60mm holes (or 80mm - doesn't matter - just use the same process) and screw 4 self tapping fan screws into the old holes and into the 5x5 behind it.
Now you can use a hole cutting saw to cut whatever size you want w/o destroying your side panel.
