Hello all,

I am a relatively new poster here and I want to start by saying how awesome these boards are. I have learned a ton in the brief time that I have spent reading through the posts. I am currently planning on building a PC for the first time. This machine is going to be used for gaming and I wanted to make sure I would have the option to upgrade in the future so I decided to go the AMD 939 route.

Not sure about the cooling device and I know almost nothing about OCing but am hoping to learn how to do it on this box.

I was also wondering about the OS I should use. I currently own Win2000 and ME and was planning on using one or the other unless I am convinced that using XP would be (that much) better.

Any suggestions, feed back, or tips for this newb will be greatly appreciated
 
Hey, im new to these posts also, and i agree they are awsome. Sounds like a pretty good comp, im currently building on myself. You didnt specify a case with that, what are you getting? im going the same route with the AMD, cept im going abit higher, 3200+ s939. But you have listed alot of OEM items there. i would be iffy on those, as long as its nothing with drivers, because sometimes....they tend not to come with the item :rolleyes:
Nice choice with the SATA drive to ;). Im a pretty big noob to, but, we all have to start someplace :D
 
That's a good fairly balanced system, but I would make a few suggestions. For one, spend a little extra and get a non-Plextor 16x and dual layer DVD burner. I think that there is one from NEC that can be found for under 80 dollars. In that category, a lot of DVD burners are deficient at burning regular CD's, so maybe instead of the second DVD drive, get a 52x cd burner, or possibly a 52x CD burner/16x DVD combo. You also might want to get a slightly larger HD, if you can afford it. And don't worry about getting your OEM components. The only ones that need drivers are really the MB, video card and possibly DVD burner, and you're getting those in retail packages, so they'll come with drivers. :D
 
He is right about the disc drives but the hard drive is fine. You'll never use 80gigs unless youre a professional photogropher or something and store crap on your system.

Everything else sounds good.

I too was a little weary about getting OEM components but then again, we got one of the best information resources for putting a box together right here! The amount of knowledge and exp on this board is staggering :p

I'm buildling my second system (selling this one here that I build last year - almost exactly a year ago). I didn't really mod this sytem at all, but I'm looking to get into overclocking some more on my new system once I get it in. Looks like we're getting pretty much the same parts - I'm only getting a 9800 vanilla though and different case & PSU, but the basics are the same... good luck, hope all goes well.
