I'm in the process of purchasing an X850 Pro, guaranteed to unlock to XT PE speeds with the 16 pipes. Is $200 a good investment in this card? I figure I won't be getting another card for a while.

How about never used? I know it would be impossible to know if it would unlock, but it's the VIVO version with the 1.6 Samsungs.
 
i would wait a little and get the 7800GS. It can already be had for 284 on newegg, may come down a little more, overclocks very nicely, and will perform better than the x850 pro.

if you really want to go balls out for your last agp investment you could go for the gainward 512mb 7800GS (really 7800 GT for agp). This is by far the fastest agp card currently available, and possibly the last great agp card.
 
hmmm ive got four hours to decide.....but if i can unlock the x850pro into an xtpe for $200 brand new, i guess i can live with the investment.

i had a chance to buy two artifacting 6800gt's for $150, but i didnt want to gamble with the rma process esp since theyre evgas.
 
first of all, what system and video card do you have right now?

I think your best bet is to buy used.

either here, ebay, or newegg refurbished.

I've had excellent luck with newegg refurbised, that's where I got my flashable to 16 pipes connect 3d x800gto and my very overclockable and stable biostart Tforce 6100-939 mobo.

got the mobo for like $40, and I got the video card for $150 back when GTO's and GTO2's were like $190 and up.

Where are you going to buy the x850(XT)? I want one but it is hard to find. I need to stay ATI since I have a 7500PCI installed that runs my other monitor and I prefer not to have 2 connected to the same card. .
 
Currently using a 9800pro...I'm buying it from an individual and it's a pro, not an xt.
 
If you're able to flash it to an XTPE, you'll have the same speed as a 7800GS for much less. Go for it.
 
dunno but I ditched my 6800 for an X800 XT PE, and not only was it faster but at the same resolution the X800 looks way better. ATI has always had the better image quality, but they are really way ahead of the competition in that respect, so I say go ATI even if the other camp comes up with a slightly faster agp card.
 
Yeah the IQ of ATI is why you see hordes of people running ATI on SLI mobos even if it's still last gen - that and nVIDA not having enough 7800-7900GT's in stock and people not wanting to deal with the SLI factor of having two cards to deal with and seeing a brand new card coming out just 3 months later that nearly beats their two card setup already. Though if you have a high res LCD i think SLI'ed 7900 GTX's is definitely the way to go. But if you have a CRT like me a single great card is best IMO and ATI is just that with the X1900XTX (again IMO).
 
yeah go for the x800pro

the 7800GS only has the SM 3.0 which is all.....It a good card but for 200$ the X800pro flashed to the x850XT will be awsome buy and in most games it will perform better and cant forget the Image Quality :cool:
