My dillema, pretty much going crazy here.

As the topic states, I'm currently in a dillema of choosing between the two top end cards and it's literally driving me crazy, the choice is between nVIDIA 6800 Ultra and ATi X800 XT PE. The price on both of these cards is $499, and yes if I choose X800 XT PE then I also choose to wait 4-6 weeks for shipment, if I choose 6800 Ultra I can get it in under 30 mins. But the competition is so close between these cards that it has been impossible for me to choose.

When the first two cards were first released, 6800 was faster than X800 in the majority of benchmarks, but as I get to more recent benchmarks, X800 has become faster than 6800 by quite a bit. Will we continue to see this throughout newer driver releases? Will ATI turn out to have beaten nVIDIA once again? Also, which of these two cards will have a better long-term value? Although 6800 is packed with more technology but few games are currently coded with these features, will 6800 get to shine through them before the next generation chips come out? Right now it looks like the 6800 is losing again to the XT PE, not by a lot, but a noticeable amount, which is why I'm wondering what the near future will be like for these two particular cards. But then again nVIDIA has been doing good on the last few driver releases and it's also doing far better than ATi wanted them to do, but 6800 IS technically more advanced than X800, which has a possibility of yielding better future results. You see where I'm going with this?!

You KNOW you are an enthusiast when you can't sleep thinking about this issue, if only the choice could be as clear as 5900 vs. 9800 or 3Dfx vs. nVIDIA back in the day.

HELP PLEASE !!! (>_<)

i think what it really comes down to it, is a personal choice, so i think its really up to you, and how long your willing to wait.

wish i could help more. :(

edit:
but if it was me, and i had to make the choice? id go with 6800, and probally make that a pci-e card, then later in 2005 get another video card when needed. (would be expensive to change to a pci-e mobo and the rest that has to come with it, but like i said, its personal choice really)

The line between benchmarks and actual game results is blurred so much, in both, each card wins practically 50/50... like they said, it's all personal preference right now. Which you want, which you feel better which, and which you have more hope in (I know it sounds corny but it's sorta like you hope has more room to grow with driver revisions..)

ATi X800 XT PE for U$499?

imma jump on this one...as the proud owner of a 6800 GT at well over ultra speeds....I'm going to agree with all...at this point its a matter of whats your gut tell ya to do......I'm sure that with more and more driver releases your gonna see increases in both cards....although ATi is always good for monthly driver releases where nvidia lacks in that area.....as more games come out that support nvidia's features you will see driver updates from them.....at this point I think nvidia was alittle ahead of their time with the SM3 on the 6800 since there are no abundance of games that use it. But that will come in time. I bought a 9700 pro 2 days after they hit the stores and used it right up till I got this 6800 gt...as a matter of fact I still use the 9700 pro in my server. So I am not partial to one or the other. I did however swear by nvidia during the geforce 2 and 3 years then lost faith with the 4 and fx years being that the ATi cards where kicking their arse. So its all about what you want...In the long run I think both cards will last for a minimum of 3 years with the newest games without a problem. But this, ofcourse, is just my 2 cents.
Good luck with your choice...but I will say that I am very confident you won't get burned with either of these outstanding cards.

You can't go wrong with either. Personally if I were getting a 6800U I would save a few bucks and just get a GT and overclock it.
