So I once had a 6800gt that was heavily limited by a athlon 2400xp. I sold the gt and got a A64 3000 with the BFG mobo. I OCed to 2.4 GHz. I then sold my xbox and other things so now im at 440 dollars. My monitor only goes to 1280x1024. Should I just get the 6800gt again or wait untill a lower end 7800 comes out (gt maybe). Also if I get the 6800gt again Ill have enuf money to get a gig memory stick for my psp. But I really like the new AA mode of the 7800. I have no clue on what to do and my Geforce 2 is annoying me. Help me decide...

My friend, it isn't better than X800 XL trust me. It's only better than X800 in Doom 3 shit. X800XL can run Doom3 just as good anyway.

Plus there are more choices for XL while some go for 245-285, and the SM3.0 stuff isn't really important IMO.

As an ex-owner of a 6800GT I prefer the X800XL so much better.
 
You know you can get a Gefoce 6800GT from newegg for 270$ right?

Also I woudn't reccomend waiting for a lower end 7xxx series card to come out as the gt version will esentially be a renamed 6800Ultra (and gts overclock to ultra speeds easy)
 
IMO, 6800GT just is bad for overclocking. I tested my card on a friend's FX-55 on a MSI nF3 Ultra mobo, ran 3DMark05, got 4835 with stock (350/1GHz) speeds, and overclocked it to 430/1.1 GHz, ran 05 again, got 4691. What the fuck. I did the same test with my X800 XL on his computer and got 5200-something on stock speeds and then 5716 when I overclocked it to 430/1.1 GHz. *Friend helped me remember the numbers*
 
first off the x800 is not better.

at best its only fractionally faster

it can not do SLI (crossfire is still vaperware)

and the 6800 can do pixel shader 3.0 while ati can only do 2.0

the price is also better.

it comes down to getting a 6800 or a 7800

the choice is a personal one.

if you want to play games today get a 6800

if you can afford to wait get a 7800

either way your good.
 
I've owned both cards and you don't know, ok? :rolleyes: Who would care less about having SM3.0? It's not a uber OMFG hax difference. You'd be fine with an X800XL for the next 1 or 2 years. I have proof myself that X800 does better than 6800GT in most games, it's right in my head. I'm a gamer and I know my stuff. Sorry to break it to you, but X800 XL actually performs better if you overclock it and its stock heatsink is better than 6800GT's since it's 110nm. :eek: He said he only has $440 and that isn't enough for SLi. Stay up to date with Crossfire's performance over Nvidia's SLi, okay? Sorry to be a dick to you but I'm stating the facts.
 
The thing is I will be able to afford a 500 dollar 7800 wen it comes out. Or a 6800gt a game and a gig memory stick for psp. When are unreal 3 games coming out? I was thinking of gettin a 6800gt now and wait for the next gen cards. ARGH!! i dont know what to do... and I dont have a SLI mobo, SLI is pointless anyweays cause when new card comes out you can sell ur card and get a new one instead of buying a second for sheap. How long do you think until a 7800gt? Will it just be a underclocked gtx?
 
Alright we have a f-a-n-b-o-y. Seriously though, wait a month or so and wait for the R520 and it's variants. Nvidia will then reply with a few of the 7800 variants to combat them. This will cause a domino effect and drastically reduce the price of the 6 series and the X series. At that point if you want to get another 6800 GT and save a few bucks, it'll make sense. Also the lower-end 7800s or R520s will have HDR, SM3.0, and transparent AA. All very cool stuff that you'll definately want to play with.

As for the uber 1337 hax0r gamer who thinks ATi is his teacher, mother, brother, and lover: I had a 6800 Ultra and changed a few months ago to the X850 XT PE. Although the ATi card runs games slightly smoother, the Nvidia card has a much better feature set, and will be much more future proof with games that take advantage of all the new technologies. The 6800 rapes 3DS while my X850 chugs along. Also, side-by-side, play Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on both cards, the vibrance of SM3.0 and the accuracy of HDR destroys the ATi card's image quality. I'm going back to Nvidia this time with a 7800 GTX or Ultra because I'm sick and tired of the Catalyst drivers that don't let me do what I want easily. The damn CCC is a blow hole, and regardless of what people say, Forceware is 10 times more stable.

Good luck with your decision, anything over the $300 range should give you exceptional performance.

EDIT: Unreal 2007 should come out late next year I think. Also you don't need SLi for a great gaming experience, I wouldn't take that into consideration.

You must have a really computer or settings wrong cause I overclocked my Geforce 6800GT It was only at clock settings of 400/1100 and it did the benchmark perfect and got me like 5552 3Dmarks or something and does about 5K at the default 350/1000 settings.
 
Lets get it out of the way: The 6800 cards can not, will not, and never will be able to pull of the effects that SM 3.0 offers at a steady FPS, or above 1024x768.. This is the reason tons of tweaks were done to the 7800GTXs pixel pipeline in order to finally run these effects at what they should be, the 7800GTX doubled MADD performance, this is the key to having these effects playable.

So, once you've realized SM 3.0 on a 6800 is totally pointless you come down to a few facts. The X800XL offers slight better performance than the 6800GT. The X800XL can also be had for brand new at only $250 at ZZF on PCIe, the 6800GT cost slightly more.

Now, will you notice a difference between the cards? No, not at all. Should you wait out for the 7800GTX slower versions? No you shouldnt, your monitor makes the 7800GTX itsself pointless, the slower versions will only be equal to 6800Ultra really and could cost around $500 for the GT version.

What I think you should do? I suggest you pick up the X800XL, or if for some reason you can find a chepaer 6800GT, pick it up. Why? Same performance, and you'll be using it and can get that stick for yourself. At the end of the day you'll be happy and notice a decent performance improvment over your old setup. Learn to love both companies for what they offer you and see that competition is good, drives prices lower!


On note about Mr. Stryker's 3DMark05 drop, your card was most likely throtteling itself. Not the card fault, its you not watching temps most likely.

Whatever his name neubpseed. I personally find Catalyst drivers to be slight better and I dont have stability issues with either. I'd also light to know what resolution you were playing with HDR at and what was your crappy FPS with it.
 
I have came up with a beautiful compramise, I buy a eVGA 6800gt now, and in three months go to the 7800, by that time it will be cheaper anyways. Should I do this or should I wait untill ATI shows their stuff? Also, do they subtract the price you bought the card for or the price that is current at that time?

EDIT: oh, even though I wont see huge jumps in fps with my monitor I really want the ne AA mode, better SM3 support and I can crank up other settings higher. So I guess step up for me, the thing iono is should I wait to see wat ATI has? When are they showing cards? Next month? For some reason I have a feeling they are gonna pull a 9700 and have something that whoops everything.

Exactly my point, well said Skyring, SM3.0 isn't important today. Wait for a game that fully supports SM3.0, you'll have a reason to buy a 7800 later. The 6800 still chugs. I can say that the Radeon X800 series are fighters, and plus, I use Catalyst 5.6 API instead of Catalyst 5.6 CCC (actually, I use NGO Optimized 2.5.6) because the excessive features could decrease performance by a tiny percentage. And lastly, the 6800GT I had, had a VF700cu on it and it never went past 45c in his system, believe me. I had Rivatuner in the background to tell me that.

Still, I'd suggest you to wait a bit longer until you REALLY must get a new card. Wait a bit longer, like a month or two, you'd benefit paying a lower price for the 7800. I say you should wait until ATI's trick came out of their sleeves, and not waste your money. I know it's irresistible to buy a new card right now.
