My Dell Rant

Ok, so October 2nd rolls around and I realize that I've put together enough money to build myself a nice new gaming machine. So I did exactly that, I visit newegg, part & purchase my dream machine. On October 5th I realized that my 19" CRT wasn't going to cut it anymore so it was time to decide on which LCD display I was going to get. I decided that the Dell 2405FPW was going to be the display for me, and hell, I wasn't waiting for any coupon codes to come up so I purchased it NEW with next day shipping and paid damn near the full price, $1031.61 with Next Day Air :D I enjoyed the machine, World of Warcraft and Counter-Strike ran beautifully. Mid November rolls around and I realize the that the hardcore gaming that I was doing was ruining my semester in school and my morale at work so I decided to part the machine and part with my display...

When I decided to sell the display I started to focus on all the little things that I could put in my ad, and this is when it all starts... I start to hear that slight whine coming from the display, you know what I'm talking about, that kind of sound that could make you go mad in a matter of minutes. At this point in the story the date is December 2nd and it was time to call satan (Dell) and get this badboy replaced (it does have a 3 year warranty, right?). I make the call and it goes GREAT! they're shipping me a new replacement display within 3 to 4 days...or so I thought.

Come 10 a.m. this morning the box arrives and I'm excited as can be, but what's this? the box is stamped all over with "Refurbished." wtf? Less than 2 months old and my replacement is a refurb, there must be a mistake. I go online and check the order invoice they prepared and sure enough...by the PRICE listed, $524.98, it must be a refurbished product. So if I decide to not return my original faulty display, this is the amount that I owe dell. I guess I just don't get how this works. I pay 1k for a broken product, and it being under warranty you replace it with a display that cost you $524.98, does this not seem criminal to anyone else?

I was on the phone with them for hours today trying to get a NEW replacement, but not even supervisors could grant me anything more than "I'm sorry sir this is policy."

Any suggestions? What would you do? do I just man up and deal with it or what?
Am I wrong in feeling/thinking this way?

Please anything, comments/suggestions/flames/rofls

Curt

Refurbs are often not even used, just refused shipments, or products returned unopened. It's probably fine.

Understandable, but imagine I'm selling it in the F/S forum, would you rather buy a New in Box or Refurb?

I don't think the policy is so bad. As long as the replacement works it's fine. You sent them a used faulty monitor they sent you back a used and renewed monitor. With many other companies you'd be SOL in a few months, but Dell will keep you supplied through any problems for 3 years. The return policy is written out clearly as well, and when making a big purchase like that you should always read the terms. If you don't like them you shouldn't buy it.

how old are you?

Do you often spend thousands of dollars on things and then get rid of them 2 months later? I know this is HardFourm and we go through things quickly but you've got problems beyond a noisy monitor.

21, and yes we've all made bad decisions on purchases.

I don't think it really matters.

The OP Said he was going to sell his monitor anyways, so either way the person buying it would be getting a used product, correct?

The buyer can either have a monitor that was used for two months and (so the OP Says) i almost brand new, or they can get the refurbished monitor that is supposedly factory serviced to be pretty much brand new.

What's the problem?

In addition, why ditch the monitor? A nice monitor is a good investment whether you game or not.

That is pretty much Dell's policy. The good thing is that you have a 3 year warranty, so you can transfer it to whoever you want. That's a good incentive for the buyer. I bought both of mine with computers and since the monitor is tied with the system, I only have a 1 year warranty.

one thing you seem to have overlooked

your monitor was worth $1031.61 2 months ago. it is not worth that now.

dell's policy is for the first 21 days they'll replace it with a brand new one, after that then you get a refurb that is equal in quality to a brand new product.

No problems, it's just that I had assumed I'd be getting a new monitor as a replacement,

new > almost new > refurb ?

24" is a little overkill for the websurfing I do imo.

Are you sure about that? This comes from Dell's Online warranty policy,

"Monitors carry the longer of either a 3-year limited warranty or the remainder of the warranty for the Dell computer to which the monitor will be connected."

Yep, you pretty much answered it. My 2405's are tied to the Dell computer. Since the Dell computer has only a 1 year warranty, so do my 2405's.

Wait am I reading this wrong? It says the LONGER of either a 3 year OR a machine warranty...

Depends on the price and warranty. Full warranty, I wouldn't care.

Actually it's still worth that amount right now..Just got spammed with like 3 of their flyers in the mail today. Online if you get a coupon they get down to like: 939$

for a new monitor

the one in question is 2 months old. it is no longer new, and they won't replace it with factory new, but rather with factory refreshed or referbished -- which in theory is better than a 2 month old monitor.
