Help!!!

I cant figure out why my conroe E6400 feels slower then my elcheapo amd xp2600.

Theres something holding it back i think. Ive installed all drivers as stated, and looked at(and performed) the windows XP thottle patch, but nothing helped.

Has anyone noticed laggy windows behaviour?? Games and benchmarks are all compareable to other conroe systems, but I havent yet heared anyone complain about 'sluggish' windows performance. Opening up a dialog takes as much as 100msec where it be instant on my other comp. Also HD tach gives me 15msec HDD accesstime , where it does 12msec with the old AMD system....

help is apreciated!

Did you also try to install the latest chipset/harddisk controller drivers?
I know my P5B Deluxe was rather sluggish at first... that was caused by a lousy JMicron raid driver.
After updating it, HDD response was much smoother, which also meant that multitasking was better... I can now easily watch a DVD while defragmenting a HDD on the same controller, without any glitches whatsoever... That was not possible before.

Ive installed the newest drivers by Asrock as stated on the website, no difference as it. (there actually intel drivers).

maybe the board is faulty?

Hmm without knowing the model I see a high suspect "Asrock", not exactly a performance brand of motherboard in "general".

According to a very popular news / review site (dutch) www.tweakers.net the ConRoeXFire-eSATA2 board is top notch price / performance. it not suited for oc'ing though. Other then that benchmarks are stock even higher on the asrock then on the asus p5b !

Is everything just sluggish? Does the mouse stutter during disk activity?

You could try reloading the BIOS defaults. Also, be sure to update the BIOS if possible--the first few versions of many vendors' BIOS's are often rather buggy. I know my P5B Bios had some issues initially.

No , the mouse doesnt' stutter, though moving a dialog seems like theres 200msec delay between it actually being moved. and then when i was copying something from the USB external disk to he internal disc, I can see the external usb led go to idle while dragging dialogs though...

Oh why does prime95 only use 25% on one core, and 25% on the other?

I dunno what to tell you....

This Conroe setup is by far faster and feels faster than any setup ever.

I have a Core Duo Yonah 2Ghz - a Athlon X2 4800+ - and a PD EE @ 3.4GHz... This Conroe kills them all

what throttle patch? Was this a clean install? (you haven't answered)

I think you need to do a clean install of windows. Be sure to install the CORRECT chipset drivers. You shouldn't need any "throttle patch"?

Here's a good review of your board, in English.
http://www.ocworkbench.com/2006/asrock/ConRoeXFire-eSATA2/g1.htm

If you did a clean install of XP-SP2 then you shouldn't be having any problems. There's no need for any throttle patch. When you are starting with a new motherboard it is always best to do a clean install.

If your XP disc is pre SP2 then it is also a good idea to slipstream it to SP2.

Instead of running Prime95 why not try running Orthos.
http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm

It runs the same Prime95 code but has a nicer GUI and is designed for fully loading dual core processors.

I can remember having trouble with some version of Prime95 not running my single core processor at 100% but Orthos doesn't have any issues.

formatted, installed xp version with sp2 nativly. No difference.
Drivers, no difference.
Benchmarks all are flying aces though.

any chance its a lemon?

nah, probably just you.

There's pretty much no way it could be slower. Unless you screwed up somewhere. wrong drivers, installed improperly, software conflict

Maybe when you reinstalled you installed some old software? I know I had Zonealarm (some old version) before I reinstalled. So when I did the clean install I just installed that version from my back up CD. Well that made everything super slow. It must have had some network files that didn't play well with the SP2+ patches. I uninstalled it and downloaded a newer version & all was well.

I just don't understand how a Core 2 could be slower in anyway. You've got the dual core power, so it should be butter smooth.

It kind of sounds like an IDE driver problem by your description of the slow response times.
#1 - do you have enough ram? are the timings and all correct, working properly, dual channel, etc.
#2 - have you checked all BIOS, OS options for IDE, bus mastering, SATA, etc... to make sure things are set up correctly.

Also, have you overclocked it at all just for kicks, to see if that improves it?

can u tell us your exact system already??

if its benching the same then its probably your video card that is giving u the lag

Sometimes a bad graphics card driver can cause problems. What are you running and what driver?

Sometimes there can be too much junk starting up and running on your computer in the background. The best program I've found to investigate start up items is AutoRuns:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx

It was originally developed by SysInternals but they were bought out by Microsoft.

Which antivirus program are you running and are you running any anti-spyware type programs as well? Some programs like Norton can slow even a fast computer down to a crawl during boot up but they're usually not too bad after that.

Turn off everything extra and then check to see if things are still lagging.
