My computer nightmare: Errors of unknown origin

I bought my computer 2 years ago and at the time it consisted of

ASRock X58 Extreme3 motherboard
Intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz @ 3.8GHz
Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz
nVidia Geforce GTX480
40gb SSD (C: )
2tb WD green (D: )
2x1tb WD black in raid0 (F: )
Corsair HX850
Corsair H50
Now for about 3-4months ago I decided I needed to beef up the graphics, so I bought myself 2x Radeon 7970 3GB since my motherboard has 2 PCI-E x16 slots.

And everything ran great for 1-2 months. Then I started to get mysterious hangups, where my software froze, my I could still move my mouse. Any software I clicked in during that time would freeze as well. If I had “My computer” up I could see how the D: drive would loose all information about it. And if I had CMD up I could do “dir C:”, “dir F:” without any problems, but when it came to “dir D:” CMD froze. Determined that it was my D: drive that was faulty I decided to order myself a new big SSD.

So now my specs looks as this:

After I installed that my computer ran great for exactly a week, then once again it froze. But this time with the difference that it would “un-freeze” after approx. 30-60 seconds and go back to normal.

Googled this error and found out that the SATA3 controller card on my motherboard was really unreliable (Marvel) and could give these problems. In the end of my googling I started to get random bluescreens that pointed at the Marvel driver so I thought it must be this. And then I moved my SSD over to the Intel SATA2 controller card and the computer worked, for 2 weeks.

This was two days ago (9/9-12), I was playing Battlefield 3 and quit the game. Then I got massive freezes to the extent that I had to reboot my computer. And now it wouldn’t boot. On reboot it wanted to do a startup repair, I let it, but it couldn’t find anything. Rebooted and it worked.

Looked in the logs and had a single error: “The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0.”

Shut it down and went to bed.

The next day I was going to play some more BF3, tried to start it thru Battlelog, “Origin is not installed”. WTF!

Went to the Origin folder and found out that the origin.exe was missing. Tried to reinstall but the installer would just quit midways thru updating with an error in the windows logs. “Not enough storage is available to process this command.”

Went to the Origin folder again and could find the origin.exe there. Sometimes it had an icon and sometimes not. When double clicking it I got the error “Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.” Read all about this and tried everything but nothing worked. Until someone wrote somewhere, try with a different user account.

Created a new one and voilá, Origin worked.

Thought hmm, my old account must be broken I’m going to remove it. Went into Windows user accounts manager and pressed delete account. Took about 30 seconds and the computer froze several times in the process. (the mouse wouldn’t move either).

Went into the windows logs and was greeted with 20-ish “The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0.”

WTH! Anyone has any ideas what might be wrong? :confused:
 
Now that you have seen the light and ditched shitty marvell sata 3 ports for faster intel sata2 ports, you should if you havent already done so format your pc and then see if you still experience the same problem with a new install on the intel ports.

I think this could just be a case of a fuked up windows installation.

I personally would do what I just mentioned, if the pc still does it right after a new install of windows 7 with fresh drivers and properly flattened formatted and repartitioned hard drives, then I would start to look at other alternatives, but the main cause to rule out would be the OS atm.

Also their is a slight possibility that you still have some traces of nvidia drivers left in your system which might be contributing to your problems, but if you can install video cards I am more than sure you already know how to uninstall video drivers properly and already know how to do a reg sweep to get rid of orphaned entries and also a sweep to get rid of orphaned nvidia files in your program files folder.

Long story short, format and start over and post back and let us know if it is fixed or still happens.

Did a fresh install when I got my new SSD so there are no nvidia drivers left on the computer. Will try to do a fresh install tonight then and see if that helps. :)
 
I had an issue like this not long ago... Seems some SSD's can't handle the LMP feature of the Intel Rapid Storage Driver... So if you are running "Intel Rapid Storage" then this could well be your fix... A quick Regfix to turn that feature off and all was Good for me... Never had a handup again...
This site explains it in more detail and give the instructions on the fix... It's quick and trying it is no danger to your system...

Seems like this will be worth a try before reinstalling since I use Intel Matrix Storage Manager. I checked up and it seems like the problem may exists in that one as well. Will try it out and report back later with results.
 
Alright, the regedit fix for LMP didn't work. Tried it out and started some bf3 gameplay, it lasted about 5 minutes then the computer froze and I had to reboot it.

Whilst booting a was greeted with "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key_".

Damnit, been reinstalling it now for 2-3hrs. Had some problem with some of the updates so they failed on installing. But now everything is installed and updated.

Got during one of the reboots I got a chkdsk check which fixed a lot of stuff. And in the logs I have some nasty errors.

First a shitload of Warnings from Source Ntfs and the message: "The file system structure on volume C: has now been repaired."

Then I got a lot of Errors also from Ntfs with the message: "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolume2."

I hope this was just some problem with the updates... will be checking back with status as soon as I got all my software up and running.
 
umm, could be a hardware issue.

Try a new sata cable as "Mysongranhills" mentioned, also run hdderase on the ssd, as I had to do that to two of mine a few days ago as they somehow got fuked up after I had them in raid 0 but then decided to use them as single non raid drives.

hdderase them in ide mode, you will need to enable ide mode and disable ahci mode in your bios, and run hdderase from either a windows startup disk or a bootable usb drive.

If its a case of bad partitioning or whatever on the drives, hdderase will clean up your drives for you to start over again on a fresh slate.

I ran into the problem with my ssd's 3-4 days ago and I would of never of thought that they were the culprit, so maybe its worth a try running hdderase ? but try the new sata cable first if you have one.
 
Alright, changed the sata cable yesterday and got a good 3hrs of bf3 gameplay done without crashing. :)

But since it could run for 2-3 weeks after reinstall last time I won't say anything is final yet. Will keep you posted with updates of how it goes.

Sometimes (most times) it is the simplest thing. Since the problem came and went maybe a HDD benchmark could show if you've solved it or it was just a coincidence.

The problem still hasn't shown itself again since I changed sata cable. :)
