My computer is randomly restarting itself...?

My computer keeps randomly restarting itself, and some times it won't reload windows, it'll just start beeping, then I have to turn it off and leave it for a while, then when I come back it starts and goes ok again. What could the problem be? It's been restarting while in XP, and I've now gone into 98 for the first time, so I'll see if it restarts with this.

My mobo is an Epox 8k7a, w/a Athlon 1.2. It's about 2 1/2 years old. I don't have it overclocked at all. Most of the time when it restarts itself, it gives the msg "Warning: System is Overclock Fail" when starting up. Can anybody help me? Is there a piece of hardware that could be screwed? Thanks a lot.

I know it's not oced but try upping the voltage. It may be your psu going. Check to see if any of the voltages look off.

Also, check your CMOS battery....you may keep losing your configurations in your BIOS because the battery may be dying...if that is the case that would maybe explain if it is defaulting back to a lower FSB/clock ratio thus giving you that overclock message..

Just something to look at..

also, try looking at the Tweak Thread stickied at the top of G[H], follow the first seven(i think?) steps or so, and then check out the "XP" section, hopefully those will help you be more stable =]

Thanks guys. I've been gone, so I'll format and try some other crap tomorrow.

A couple things that may or may not mean anything: I've been getting automatic email replies saying that a message was sent from me that was infected with the mydoom virus. I never sent emails to those people, and I never open attachments that I don't know what they are (didn't we learn that in like 2nd grade?!?). Also, I have 3 partitions, 1 w/98se, 1 w/XP Pro, and 1 for storage. In 98se, it has not restarted itself.....so could this point to a XP specific problem? The only thing that makes me question that theory is that it sometimes won't even reboot after turning itself off, so wouldn't that point to a hardware problem? Or could something wrong w/XP actually make the computer unable to restart at all?

Thanks a lot for your help, I used to kind of have more of a clue with some of this stuff, but haven't cared because I haven't had to for the last couple years :D . Thanks though, I really appreciate it.

It sounds like it may be heat related in some way. The case where you have to let it sit for a while and then it works fine when you turn it on points me toward heat. This may not be your only problem, but it may be helping out.

Could be, but it's usually running around 41 degrees C, I think, which I didn't think was too much?
