Hey guys,

I have a strange issue with my HTPC. I never constantly have it running, and only turn it on when I need it. But something strange happens. Sometimes when it is off, the computer will randomy turn on. Without me or anything touching it!!! This happens quite often, but there is never a specific amount of time it waits before it turns on. Here are the specs:

Intel Celeron 2.6Ghz
Gigabyte 8S661FXM Motherboard
Infineon 256mb PC3200 RAM
WD 40GB 7200RPM HD
LG 52x CD-Rom
ATi Radeon AIW 9000

Any suggestions at all?

BTW, please don't bash my celeron, I got the whole system brand new for $180 CDN. Sometimes it is seconds that it turns on, and sometimes minutes, and sometimes hours. I have no idea what is going on with my computer. Please help!

Thanks

exorcist? well.. maybe its the wiring.. might want to try a different power supply

ok, I have a new develoment. It turns out that the only time it will turn it self on is when I turn if off by pressing the power button, instead of shutting down through windows. Any ideas guys? My guess is the button now, but I don't know.

I would also guess that the button is stuck or something, and then releasing later, starting up the computer.

check in the bios what you have your power button set to. Sometimes it'll be soft off/stand by etc

any device plugged into it that has permission to wake the computer from sleep (perhaps a USB drive? mouse?) will turn it on. Just a guess.

I have barely anything connected to it currently. Just power, a usb mouse, and sound and video. But let me try some of your ideas. Thanks guys.

Bro? All kidding aside, and I'm not bashing your machine. Get the F*&*# out of there........
That's some wierd shit.

If you're still home and in front of it, you can also try to troubleshoot inside the machine. Re-wire some power wires. There could be a conflict. Just keep a Crucifix nearby.

Dude I had the same thing happen back when I was going to school in rez .... My computer was totally off. And It just turned on and booted up. Now I thought maybe there was a power on lan feature thingy. So you could remotely turn it on. But When I took a look at the back .... I did not have the network cable plugged into the machine because I Had been messing with my router. Anyways at that point I Just went to bed and decided not to try to find the reason why it turned on. Because I didn't want to find out that it really should not have turned on.

Then again lots of weird things happened around my area where I went to school ... not to mention me seeing a ghost ... or what I take to be a ghost .... but thats a whole other story

And im not kidding about this ... It really did happen ... and it freaked me out.

Unplug the wires that go from the power button to the motherboard and see if it happens.

lol, silly superstitious people. It's probably just a messed up power button wire thats sending faulty signals. check to make sure all the cabling is okay.

my guesses would be either wake on lan

or power on after power failure

both of which can be enabled/disabled in the bios. it might think there is a power failure or something after you shut it off with the button? i dont really know but check those out.

and also unplug your power button and try a different one.
