Making my dad a computer, has 512MB PC2100, CD-RW, 300W PSU, Abit NF7-S, and a Maxtor and WD 80GB HDD. I installed everything on the Maxtor (brand new hdd by the way) and about ten restarts later, it wouldn't boot. It froze during the IDE detection part. I was able to get the data off by making it a slave to another hdd, but the hard drive no longer worked on that computer, it wouldn't be detected.

So, thought it was a shitty hdd and was going to RMA it. So I used another hard drive, the western digital 80GB. installed everything on that perfectly, and then about ten restarts later it wouldn't boot, the same problem started happening.

WHAT THE HELL??

These were on different mobos, was on a chaintech I believe, now an Abit NF7-S. What could it be?

Tried booting off my IDE controller card on the WD, and it was detected by the controller, but couldn't boot in safe mode or regular (restarts before windows logo).

HELP PLEASE!!
 
Do you have another PSU to try. That one might be bad or going that way.
 
must be a transdimensional bit chewing blackhole
or it could be the PSU :p like Philip said

actually Id avoid that machine for awhile and throw any HDD it effected into another known good computer and run the manufacturers HDD diagnostic

but based on what you said the PSU is likley the culprit
