Hi, a couple of days ago I noticed a significant change when using my computer. I noticed that everything takes longer to load...in general, everything is really damn slow now. The first thing I did was check the task manager, and I found that my CPU Usage is higher than normal (around 4-100% just idling) and my PF Usage is really high (446 mb idling). Anyways, I looked at the process list to find any program that looked suspicious of anything. Did I find anything?...nope, nothing. I first thought it was SP2, because I installed that no too long ago, but then I'm wondering why didn't it do this right after I installed it...sooo I need help to find out what caused this. Please anything would be appreciated. Thanks!

Also, there doesn't seem a particular program leeching all the power, everything seems to just randomly spike in CPU and Memory usage.

Hi,

Did you mean to post this in another forum, and got here my mistake? ;)

Hey, stuff happens, don't worry.

Maybe Operating System' s Forum could help? General Hardware?

Luck though :)

Mine does the same thing... but I run Folding@home... even when my computer is idle the usage is pegged at 100% :D

/seriously, if you don't find any processes clocking time in task manager, I'd get a good spyware program and make sure your AV files are up to date.

I scanned with Spybot and Norton...nothing comes up...uh...just now my harddrive made the sound like when it turns off...does that mean anything?

Might want to back your shit up(to a different drive or CD/DVDs), and have it checked out or replaced. Is explorer.exe taking up a lot of RAM/CPU? That can cause a lot of things to slow down. How is your computer configged? Is system restore off? Whats the size of the page file? Need more details to make a close approximation of the problem.

Yes it explorer.exe randomly takes up a lot of RAM/CPU.

System restore is on, and I think the page size is 12% of 60 gb.

Computer is the configurated the same from when I first installed XP.

Worse comes to worse, I have to reformat, which isn't that bad...just got to wait for that new harddrive to come in.

Might want to change some settings. System restore > off. I set my PF to 768MB, set yours to whatever you wish, though 60GB seems rather much. If explorer is taking a lot of your CPU cycles and/or RAM, you could wait it out, or you could restart your computer. I have no idea what its doing when it does that, but it irritates the hell out of me so I reboot and I'm set. Have you run Chkdsk or defrag lately? Might give you a slight performance boost to get rid of fragmentation, and chkdsk to see if anything isnt too fucked up.

I cant think of much else, I just lost all train of thought so, perhaps some one else might give you some help.

I'm curious, what are your system specs?

Thanks anyways CBR, here are the specs:

AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.33 ghz
Abit NF7-S v2
Crucial 512 mb PC2700
Maxtor 60 gb 6L060J3
Creative Sound Blaster Live!
ATI Radeon 8500 64 mb

There is absolutely no reason your PF usage should be up that high with that system. If I can think of anything else, I'll get back to you. Reformatting is drastic, but unfortunatly it does help in extreme cases. Have you installed any software lately that might have caused this problem? Did you play around with any settings. Before a reformat, I'd atleast try to repair the XP install. If that doesnt do anything then have at the reformat.

Yeah, I was wondering if I did install or do anything lately, but I don't think I did besides SP2...this really is making me wonder. I'm probably going to reformat,...I'd like a fresh start.

My secretary's PC here at work was acting the same way late last week... Adaware and Spybot picked up alot of stuff (NT 4.0.... hasn't been formatted... since..... god knows when)..... but it didn't solve the problem..... found out she had the funlove virus.... along with a few hijackers.... there were icons appearing on her desktop every few minutes... an increasing number of things in the tray........... the usual BS.... evenually I just started going through her hard drive and looking for things we didn't recognize... kill processes... eventually figured out I could open task manager... kill explorer and then restart it and not have the 100% explorer.exe usage..... helped out immensely on her P2 450MHz... Good luck!!

Keep on Folding!!
