RIP OFF all of the AMD stickers, send them to me, and then get Intel inside stickers....catch my drift?
And nice lappy choice.
And nice lappy choice.

Linux/Unix, etc.
And windows works all the time for me - XP/2000 kicks the crap out of the 9x/ME/3.1 versions.
But I'm a Linux man myself...
Now on topic:
My school is supposed to be famous for tech and stuff, but look at this recommendation for a computer:
http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/CCC/Student/#computer
Recommended to have a 2.8 Ghz CPU with 800 Mhz FSB and a 64 MB video card.
And you know what? Kids at my school are computer morons - they all buy the same dell computer and all they do is play music with them. My school doesn't require you to use programs that tax your comp, the most stressful would probably be Matlab
Way to go, WPI.
So stick with what you got, your school's tech dept. probably has no clue what they're talking about, kind of like mine. My school also says Linksys stuff is low quality, even though they're made by Cisco Networks...
Dirty B said:Hey guys I want to shed some light on this. I went to RIT (Rochester Inst of Tech) as a mechanical engineering student. I had an Athlon the whole time I was there and never had any issues running my engineering programs.... the ones that DID run!
Some engineering programs such as Solid Works and some CAD programs wouldnt run on my computer, reason being I didnt have an intel processor. During the setup it wouldnt let me install and a pop up window would show up and tell me basically it was because I had an AMD (not in so many words)
Ran it on my roommates SLOWER P3 and no problems, installed and running.
So I say you are ok with the AMD, but dont be surprised if you arent able to install some of the required programs. This was almost 4 yrs ago, so things could have changed but thats just an FYI.

woopee. that's just sillyDnkMax said:I dont know bout that.

Ive been running amds since my 333celeron.

Heh, I'm afraid to look up what my school (RIT) or some of my friends' schools suggest.wayne said:

I hate that they don't reccomend an AMD option. But that's ok. I'm actually working on it right now and it's pretty quick for a work computer. I don't play games or use anything really taxing (XMLSPY, Dreamweaver MX, Notepad, Outlook, and Firefox are the only things I've ever got running).
All of the IT people run AMD rigs though. They just buy all intel stuff for work because it's cheaper for UH when they buy 15,000 computers at once.
Edit: They were smart enough to build this though: http://mckinley.cs.uh.edu/index.php?sid=4612&aktion=artikel&rubrik=001001002&id=16&lang=en
They're working up to a Petabyte slowly. State funding cuts and all.
haha, does Aopen pay them?Choice of an Aopen Desktop case (shown at right) X-CUBE w/Aopen logo and 4 2.0 USB ports on the front. Includes Sony DVD/CDRW drive.

Sit those people down at 20 different computers with either a p4 2.0 or an athlon and they would never now the difference.
And in all honesty I don't see where they can say a celeron cant handle the programs either. Its a p4 with less cache, and less cache has only shown to make it slower in a bunch of programs. Not unable to perform the duty, just slower.
I say take your machine, don't mention it to any of the profs and go about your merry way.
