I bought an a510 about a month and a half ago and have been very satisfied with it, being a new user and all. Well I took it out to the desert for a weekend and it got pretty messed up. My brother droped it once while the lense was out, plus just a lot of wind and dirt wasnt good for it :(

Anyways, basically whats wrong with it is the zoom lever feels really grainy and when I power on the camera the lense cover doesnt open all the way :( I have to lighty open the cover with my finger. For having the camera for slightly over a month it sucks to have caused these issues so early in its life.

I havent been using it because I figured the less it moves the better chances I have of fixing it, when I figure out how to fix it, thats where you come in, how do i fix it? btw it still takes pictures just fine
-I was thinking of getting a can of air and just trying to blow out as much dirt as i can? Seems kind of dangerous to do by the lense though eh?
-Now I also wondered would something like this be covered by canons warranty?
--even if its not, should i send it to canon for fixing?
-Should I take it to a camera store and have them fix it?

Im not sure, lets hear from the pros

I don't have a lot of experience with these sorts of cameras, but here are my thoughts:

-I was thinking of getting a can of air and just trying to blow out as much as i can? Seems kind of dangerous to do by the lense though eh?
I would definitely give this a try. I use canned air all the time to blow dust off of lenses and the various battery- and memory-related nooks and crannies.

-Now I also wondered would something like this be covered by canons warranty?
From these conditions (which may not be quite what yours are), it looks like it probably won't be covered. The warranty excludes problems "(f) because of faults caused by shock or fall, sand, dust, dirt, damp or corrosion, leaky batteries, repair or cleaning by unauthorised personnel".

--even if its not, should i send it to canon for fixing? -Should I take it to a camera store and have them fix it?
I would choose sending it back to Canon over taking it to a camera store. Among other reaons, Canon's warranty (if something further should go wrong) won't cover any work done by people other than Canon.

I've taken appart one digital P&S camera to clean sand out...it wasn't pretty. I recommend not opening it up unless you have to.

The above camera was a Richot or something like that (I've heard that these cameras "Drop like flies"). After removing the lens and clearing dirt from the entire gear assembly, one of the sensors went bad and the camera never realized the lens was fully retracted and it kept resetting when the motor locked up.

If the lens protector thing isn't opening fully, that is probably where there is sand worked in. I'd focus on that area to try coaxing it out instead of dissassembling the entire camera and risking something else going wrong. Cheers.
