Ok [H]user's.

Just finished a long time at war and am ready to come home and build an Ultimate rig.

Here's the deal, I have been away so long I don't really know where to start so was hopeing I can get the input.

I was looking at this

I7 Extreme 15mb cash 4.0
Asus Extremem IV
64 gb Ram
Rog II Video card
Cosmos II case.

guess the question I have is this.

Is the I7 Extreme worth the 1000 or is there a SB processor/mobo combo that would save me almost a grand and get me the same performance.

I dont care about the benchmarks but performance caps is what I am after.

Any help would be appreciated. I have about 10 k for build so moneys not the issue, its the product :)
 
I'm not a pro or anything but a dual Xeon setup would be long lasting and very powerful. Should be some smart people coming on here soon but I usually see the most powerful setup rigs from those into multiple (3+) screen gaming.

i would go 3930k and use the extra cache on another gpu.
 
3930K CPU - $500 at MicroCenter if you've got one nearby - you won't see any real performance increase with the Xtreme chips.

I agree with this. Several reviews I've read get the same perf. out of 3930K by simply OCing it. If you look at the recent 3970K you'll see Intel pumped up the max power draw on the chip to 150W. OCing usually rquires more CPUv so this is basically just a bin-sorted chip specced to run with higher voltages. Stick with 3930K and save the cash for more GPU's and screens. With a budget like yours multiple 27" QHD or 30" 2560 X 1600 screens would be :cool:
 
Even if you're going for ultimate, get a 3930k. It's a BEAST and the only difference between it and the 3960x is a different starting multiplier (irrelevant because of overclocking) and 3mb of cach. You'll be fine. Pair that with an Asus Rampage IV Extreme, some corsair dominator platinum, a corsair AX1200i, and new-almost released-most amazing case ever corsair 900d, and a pair of GTX 690s. As ultimate as ultimate gets.
