And he's a lazy bastard and wont make an account here for himself so I'm helping him out. Here's what he sent me.

"When I'm playing any game I can play for about ten minutes, and then the sound loops and my monitor goes black and I have to press the power button to turn it off. Then when I try to turn it back on it doesn't start, but if I unplug the power chord and plug it back in it will start. This started a few days ago when I started playing Trine, and now it happens on pretty much every game I play."

Try listing the computer specs after trying the troubleshooting guide first. The we can see what he has done to figure it out himself.

sounds like a psu or a heat issue or both. As gwarren007 said please list the specs of his system including model #'s and then we can help you.

system specs would help. odds are if your friend is less than ambitious, I'd consider checking to see if his any areas, especially the heatsinks on the cpu/gpu are clogged with dust...

Had this problem before. Not a good sign. I had to replace the motherboard and memory. Even had the no power on issue - it took a few mins to be able to power on again via power button. I also had an issue where the systime would not be kept current, due to the CMOS/battery not operating properly and draining.

Anyway, look at the motherboard first. Hope you have a warranty for it.

first step: he needs to get a can or two of compressed air. open the case and spray out all the fans and inside the power supply to get rid of the dust. Then turn the power on and repeat with the spinning fans. if any are not working they should be replaced. if he is still having issues after that, well, it is going to get painful.
