So i got this compaq laptop. And i kinda dropped it and now the screen is very dim. But still works. How easy is it to replace or fix this problem. Please dont' tell me i have to purchase a new screen!
 
If it got dim after dropping it, the first place I'd look is a loose connection to/from the inverter. Failing that and if you think the inverter itself is still good, you can buy replacement backlights for about $20 and swap it. It's not really difficult to do, it really just requires care, and a clean environment as if you get dust or dirt on the LCD panel or on the backlight, you'll see spots after it's reassembled.

I'm a laptop tech and have done it a few times with good success, it's not terribly hard and you can find instructions via a google search since pictures are much more helpfull than words :)
 
You might want to make sure the..um... "screen-close dimmer" (hard to word it...) is not stuck? You know, when you close the lid of your laptop and the backlight turns off?

My friend said his laptop screen was really dark. Puzzled, I went over to his house and found out that for some odd reason that particular latch/switch was pushed in. I poked around with a screwdriver and like magic the backlight came back on.

Indeed - a strange occurance, but maybe you'll get lucky too!

how would i check if the inverter is still good?
