My Accelero 7970 Crossfire Experience

Preface:
I wanted to share this with fellow [H]ard-Forum members who wants silence as well as performance w/o going the water cooling route.

I found these in stock early last week @ performance-pcs.com for $75! Much cheaper then newegg or anywhere else that even had them in stock.

Performance PCs even had gentle typhoon AP 15s in stock, which is a rare thing.

I AM NOT advertising or is associated with them in anyway. Just wanted to pass the word incase those who want to find them:

The preparation:
While waiting for my Accelero 7970s to arrive I wanted to do some prep work.
Knowing that changing my 7970s from exhaust blower style of cooler into the type that dump heat into the case. I took the steps to improve airflow in my Corsair 600T.

I removed the front/top punch grill for better air flow.

Next, added Typhoons AP 15s in my SSD hard drive age for added cold air in take. These sit above the main 200MM in take.

As other reviewers have said,

Mounting those bloody spacers are a fucking pain if you aren't careful.

Arctic Cooling really need to include EXTRAs double sided tape.
For those that are doing this, you NEED an x-acto type of knife to extract the stuff carefully.

I set mine over night to cure.
I had one heatsink that failed to bond out of the 20 or so per card so that wasn't so bad. I noticed the back of the card had an exact type of chip that wasn't cooled so I wasn't too worried about it.

You need lots of q-tips, rubbing alcohol and cotton balls if you want good adhesion.

This is measured with an iphone app @ 12" away from the case.
It's not scientific but it will give you some baseline.

Corsair 600T before Accelero:

OFF: 32 db
Idle: 40 db
Full Load: 60 db

After:
OFF: 32 db
Idle: 40 db
Full Load: 41 db.

Yes that's correct, under full load, it was no louder then the system at idle.

Was it worth it? Yep!

That's awesome dude. Thanks for documenting the process. Hopefully those on the fence about these coolers will see that they're good alternatives to non-reference cards.

Also, why has no one commented yet? :confused:
 
Damn nice job on installing those, and I bet it was a pain putting all heatsinks on, but looks awesome. Do you know what your load temps before were? 70 degrees on gpu 1 seems high with a quality aftermarket cooler like the Accelero.

Great job, looks like an excellent build! I ordered one through newegg, should be here Tuesday, can't wait, this reference cooler is just soo loud. Have you monitored the VRM temps with this cooler vs. reference using AIDA64? I'm curious to know how those temps are affected as well. Any improvement with overclockability?

Before it was around 90 - 95 C for the top and mid 80s for the bottom.

ATM the top card is basically using recycled air from the bottom one hence the higher temps.

I'm weighing the option of switching my window clear panel with the mesh panel that I can add fans to it.

But I am unsure of how much noise that will add even though they'll be gentle typhoon AP 13s. supposedly dead quiet but 4x going at the sametime is a diff story.

I did not monitor VRM temps before or after, but i can check now.
Overclockability? Yes for sure.
Before I was unable to do the max of CCC when crossfired now I can hit 1125core and 1575 memory on BOTH cards in crossfire no problem.

I'm suprised that first card's VRM still hit near 94, granted my quickly RMA'd XFX 7970 DD BE VRM temps on that cooler in single card would go to 110C+ and then the card would crash. My Reference HIS 7970 hits about 85C on a nominal overclock, and will go into the 90's @ 1.2V and 1200mhz
 
Thanks for that information & nice rig! Just to clarify though.. the ramsinks and sinks on the VRM's are all held on with double sided thermal tape? No 2 part permanent thermal adhesive used at all?

No,
everything is held on by the 2 part thermal epoxy.

The only double sided tape was some spacers for the hsf mount itself.
 
do you think the phone is wrong about the db readings? Is the noise difference when gaming really that noticeable?

Yea it's pretty noticeable so i doubt the phone is wrong.

2 7970 going at 60% is pretty loud.

Thanks. Those VRM's still seem to get very warm. Do you know what the temps were reading with the stock cooler by chance?
 
wow. really contemplating buying one.... wish the installation wasn't such a pain. i'm the clumsiest guy on the planet when doing stuff like this.
 
Follow up question. The G1 "glue" that you use on the ram and vrm's.. does it dry like cement or does it stay kinda rubberized? A poster in another thread stated I could peel it off if I wanted to remove it. Could you please confirm?

I used the g1 glue on a friends twin turbo II heatsink for his 6950. It can be peeled off easily.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I might be off to give one of these a try after all as my biggest apprehension was not being able to put the stock HS back on. If thie G1 really comes off that easily I'm in business! :D
 
This glue that artic use can be cleaned off with nail polish remover quite easily.

I tested this with some extra glue I had so I just put it on an extra heatsink, let it dry over night.

Next morning, I used some nail polish remover with a q-tip and it came off.

Imagine what acetone would do :)

So you confirm that the G1 stays kinda "rubbery" even at full cure correct?
 
I don't know what the G1 is but yea the glue that came with the AC 7970 coolers stays rubbery.
 
I'm not an expert about cooling... but I think i see a design fault on the VRM heatsinks and the memories heatsinks should be turned 90degrees... the middle ones are ok.. the right and left ones should be on the same direction as the middle ones... because it will follow the same direction of the big one on the top making the air flow better.

yeah, if you already have full-blown water setup, there's no point in getting accelero, waterblocks cost about the same and cool much better...

I'm trying to wean myself off full water. Temps are great but I'm dead tired of messing with it. Closed loop on the CPU is about as far as I want to go. I was hoping the Accelero would perform up to snuff but the threads about it vary so much in the VRM department it's got me looking around at all my spare WC stuff again. :rolleyes: I might just give one a go anyway.

VRM is fine if you use afterburner to do a custom fan profile.

Me going full water is just a result of going thru 2 H100 units AND 1 h80, still full of pump noise and crap.
