Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu w/ AS5

case
Silver RAIDMAX ATX268SW Mid-tower Computer Case w/ Window, 320W PS & 2 Blow Holes http://www.directron.com/atx268sw.html

upon startup my temps are around 60c, on load it's normally 70c. I know the case i got 2 or 3 years ago isnt that great, but should my temps really be that high? i used the same case in my p4 2.4 stock cooling setup and i atleast had temps in the 50's. I've reseated the heatsink/fan twice, and the second time with as5.

What should i invest in first? what are some better fans ? the zalman sure runs quietly but i probably need a better cooling solution. Also, what are some case recommendations? I need a nice quiet and good cooling solution but budget is very important.

i used this case before for athlon, xp, duron, and sempron builds. non of the temps were ever higher than 45c. most of them running stock amd heatsink.

not sure what to say, maybe you are applying the paste wrong? maybe the heatsink is bad? but 60c is really high. i never even seen 60c load temps on amd machines i built.

invest in a $50-$100 case by antec would be a start. i always get good result from their cases. though there are better cases but price is a concern.

where the hell do those 4 fans in the front suck there air in from? dry drilling some holes in the front of the case to let the fans breathe if you wanna be cheap. Otherwise, get a nice case. The heatsink you have shouldn't be a problem.

Maybe your temps arent being reported properly? try a BIOS update.

I would bet money that your heatsink is not making proper contact with the cpu. There is no way the temps should be that high. I would try a remount and look at the AS5, you should be able to see if it was making contact. Also, is your zalman hot to touch? If it was making good contact with the CPU, and your CPU is running that hot, you should hardly be able to touch it.

4 fans? there are just 2 side fans. and i cant remove the front, it's bolted in with machine screws. Hmm.. could there be something wrong with my heatsink/fan? Also i just recently updated the bios to the newest version, and i checked temps in bios and in speedfan. I also put my hand into the case and after load it's really hot on my hand.

to dirtnap: after its been on for a while i can touch the heatsink around the fan on the zalman and it is hot, so it has to be making contact. i can try remounting and screwing it in harder? for as5 i put a dot on the cpu, then i twisted the heatsink around on it then screwed it in.

I agree, bios updates can fix many abnormal temperature problems. Also, remember to enable cool n quiet. But even without cool n quiet, you shouldn't be getting anywhere near 60C. And isn't 70C the shutdown temp for A64's?

in bios i manually set it down to setdown on 70c but it normally waits till it gets alittle over that. I also forgot to mention that i got a antec 350w smartpower supply with a fan on buttom, and thats when i started noticing really hot temps. could that be affecting anything?

You can try remounting the heatsink, your temps should be alot lower. The socket 754 a64's are notorious for reporting bogus temperatures though. 70c is like 158f!!! Also make sure the fan on the Zalman is running a full speed. I have a 3000+ Clawhammer and it runs 44c under load with the stock HSF.

If you are worried that your case temps are high, just open up the side of the computer, even place a desk fan blowing into the case. I still think it is 1) Something with the heatsink, either not making very good contact or 2) Temperatures are miss reporting.

when Folding @home i have percent set to 95% and get temps in 50c to 53c and im scared whats normal for idle and load? amd64 2800+newcastle

i have stock heatsink wit some artic silver rice grain size, then spreaded out thinly with cardboard like piece to fill the micro valleys, heh.

my idle is 43c and load is 50-53c

Extremely hot is my Prescott 478 3.4 w/a lapped xp120 and a 60cfm enermax 70f ambient temp. idle is 49c/load 65c..... but hey I'm still 8c from thermaling it.......

I would hope that PSU didn't have the fan blowing into the case, but it's a possibility. There's a crazy off chance it got mounted backwards during production...

If it keeps this up I'd recoomend RMAing it if you can. If the HS gets hot and it's still getting up to 70C then something's probably wrong with the CPU.

You said that at startup it gets to 60C. Does it get that hot just in the time it would take to get into the BIOS and check it?

well i just looked at my cousins antec 430w and it was setup the same way, and i compared screenshots so it's mounted properly. theres a fan on the bottom of the psu, and it's probably blowing out. I just booted and checked bios temps, it was 61c. I also forgot to mention that the case temps are always relatively cool in the range of 30-36c. So i am starting to fear more that the problem is probably a bad cpu or my cpu heatsink/fan?

Yeah if you can boot from cold and get 61C right away and your HSF is heating up on load (implying that there is heat transfer) , it's either reporting temps wrong or the CPU's messed up. I don't think there's any other possibilities.

hey. so i entirely reseated my cpu and the zalman. i put on new as5 (a pea of thermal paste, than spread it out like the instructions say so) and cleared up some of the cables and waited about an hour. I started up the computer and i checked bios temps and it was 61c.. when i was in windows i looked at my speedfan temps and it says all the case temps were around 32-35c. So i'm pretty sure, even though i lack proper case cooling it's probably not that. I also checked my rpm on my zalman, set on max from the speedfan2 it ships with it's spinning at 2446rpm. I knew that was low, but technically i taught this was normal because the zalman is suppose to be a "quiet" cpu cooler. I aksed my cousin what his normal rpm was and he said 4000-5000rpm. Could something be wrong with my fan? maybe i should get one of those new xp90 + panaflo setups (is this compatible with my case/mobo?).

try skipping the fanmate and directly hooking it up to a power line. Maybe the fanmate is messed up.

Well, your BIOS is probably missreporting the temperature for you CPU. I dont see how the heatsink can be warm to the touch and have your cpu be that hot.

I disconnected my fan controller and my cpu fan's rpm went from 2446 to 2637, although nice it only drops my temp by a degree or so. Well i flashed my bios with the newest version, what else can i do to confirm that it is just a bios / sensor problem?

edit: i loaded up everest, this is all my temp / sensor info (tell me if you need any other info):

My next reccomendation is to underclock your processor and see if that makes a temp difference. I'd take it down to maybe 1.3v and maybe about 1.2GHz. If your temps are still around 60C on a cold boot, then I'd say it's your temp sensor or a bad processor. I'll look forward to hearing what that does.

well heres my current lead, i googled around and found out that my mobo vnf3-250 has a common bios problem to just simply show incorrect temps on certaint bios versions. I'm using the 03/21 one right now, looking around to download one of the older bios or the original one which i hear show correct temps but the chaintech site is down right now. If i cant find it i'll try your experiment to confirm if it is a bios problem or not.
