My 9800pro = Dead basically???

I have had this Sapphire Radeon 9800pro 128mb Atlantis (r350) graphics card for about 2 years now and it has been great. I was planning to buy a 7900GT in the next few weeks.

2 nights ago I was playing Need for Speed Most Wanted, I then stopped to watch an hour long AVI file. After this I loaded GTA San Andreas and was playing it for approx 50 seconds when I noticed something odd in the sky. The sky was flashing and it had weird artifacts in it. Then green lines started to appear. I immediately turned off the PC because I knew my gfx card was overheating. It turned out the fan on my card died.

Today I went to the shop and bought an Iceberq 4 VGA cooling fan and ramsinks. I fitted this onto my card and booted up the PC, all was fine. Tonight I decided to play some Need for Speed Most Wanted and noticed that the game had some weird graphical problems. I have uploaded a small movie file for you to see...

I loaded up San Andreas and noticed a similar problem...

GTA San Andreas

and

Half Life 2

I overclocked my gfx card to 400/350 a month ago and had no problems. I am now running it at the default speeds but am still getting the same problems. When I run SCAN FOR ARTIFACTS in Ati Tools, it says no errors are found but there are yellow lines all over the cube

Is my card dead basically? I was planning to sell this on ebay for about £50 because the money would really help pay for my new upgrade

I would guess that your card is on its last leg. Clock it back to stock or less and hope it lasts until you get new card.

BTW - How do you plan on getting a 7900GT PCI-E to work with an AGP slot? 9800 Pro's were never made with PCI-E interface.

I will be buying a new motherboard also so it is no problem. I really wanted to sell this card on ebay to help pay for my upgrade but what bad luck. I will be posting on here in the next few days asking what sort of motherboards are good.

Ya as others users have posted clock your card back down to stock my r350 9800pro wont go above 395 and I have a vga silencer 3 on it.

Hmm....wonder what that was... ;)
lol

If you must know, it was a TV show about cars called Top Gear with Jeremy Clarkson.

My card is at stock speeds now but I still see artifacts. Could it be the fan I installed isn't fitted corrextly? If so, why does the fan and blue LED still work on the card?

How do I know the fan is fitted properly? I had a hard job removing the stock fan.

Take the new HSf assembely off, and look for contact signs on the HS; should be a good contact area shown my thermal paste. If your not seeing this, try to reseat it right witth he push-pins and if that still dosent work, just clock the sucker down and hope for the best until you can get that 7900gt.

Good Luck

Yeah, definitely check this. Sounds like you haven't fitted the new heatsink properly. GPU cores generally don't die like this. Memory will degrade over time from overclocking with insufficient cooling, but the gpu will generally not degrade.

Hi,

Ok I am a little confused about what you are talking about dchrsf. You say look for contact signs? what do you mean by this.

Let me explain EXACTLY how I installed the new fan...

1) Took the stock HSF off the 9800pro card by pinching the 2 black pins together (HSF then fell out)

2) Opened the Iceberq 4 Box (picture below)

Iceberq4%20Box.jpg

Iceberq4%20ALL.jpg

3) Applied thermal paste to the chip on the card and put fan ontop of card. Secured fan with 2 black pins that came with the fan (see pic below)

Iceberq4%20Back%20Fan.jpg

Fan was study and didnt move.

4) I then peeled off the 4 sticky pads and placed them on the 4 square chips on the gfx card. I then placed the 4 copper heatsinks on top of the sticky pads. Heatsinks are sturdy also.

5) Plugged the card into the AGP port. Fan spins, LED light is on.

Is this correct?

The fan is just plastic, there is no heatsink on the actual fan itself (as far as I know) but there are 4 small heatsinks.

I filled in an RMA form on the ATI website a few days ago (before I bought the fan) they just now replied with the following information...

Here is the RMA number you have requested:
CSC2xxxxx
RMA Number :102xxxxxxxx
Part Number :63041xxxxxxx

QUESTIONS:

1) I am not sure how old my card is, but I think it is older than 2 years. Shall I send the card to ATI for a replacement even when I am sure it is older than 2 years??

2) I have the Iceberq fan fitted onto the card (which cost £9). Should I take that off and put the broken stock fan back on the card? or should I send the card to ATI with the new fan fitted?

3) My card was overclocked recently, would they know it was overclocked? Would I still get a replacement card sent?

thanks for any replies

If your going to try and send it back you will have to put the stock cooler back on.

They might replace it if you tell them the fan died and damaged the gpu.

Best of luck !

OK, I will be taking this card and trying it in a friends PC. If it displays artifacts on his PC, I will take off the new fan and put the old stock fan back on. I will then complete the instructions given by ATI and send my card to them. I have to send it all the way to Canada (I'm from UK) but nevermind.

I am sure my card is more than 2 years old now I think of it, but I gave ATI my serial number and other card details and they issued me the email above so I guess all is OK. I will sell the card on eBay as brand new and buy a new graphics card, motherboard and hard drive soon.

I had the same problem. I burnt out a 9700pro, then I got an 9800pro and got these problems. I tried the card in other machines and still same thing. Card is dead in my book.
