i was playing far cry 1.3 today on the following system:

P4 2.6C GHz
512mb pc3700@400mhz 2.5-4-4-7 generic
Asus P4S800D
VisionTek 9600XT 128mb (bad cooling!)
everything at stock speeds

and i toyed around with the video settings and i played the game for over an hour at 1024x786 with 4x AA and 2nd level AF @ medium all except high water, high shadows, and high particles. it was smooth! no jerks a'tall! loading was about 30 seconds.

so if you're in the market for a budget-lowend card get the 9600XT 128mb!

i just upgraded my 9600 Pro, i have to say i loved that card, had it over a year if i remember correctly, my 6800GT is much better, but for the price i paid for the 9600 it was damn well worth every penny

Its is a very good card, able to play all current games with very decent quality and performance.

For the price of a new 9600XT you can easily get a Radeon 9700 or 9700 Pro used on Ebay that will give you even better performance on the same budget. Worth a thought.

Farcry is the reason I upgraded. It was the first game my 9600Pro didn't handle real well. Then I got a X800Pro to replace it, then later got a 6800GT as the X800Pro was dissapointing comparitively in some areas to the 6800GT.

A quick look at ebay shows 9600 XTs going in the $110-130 range. It also shows 9700 Pros going for about the same money. Don't waste your money on the XT, the 9700 Pro is EASILY the card to get in that price range.

I don't think the OP is in the market for a video card. He seems quite happy with the one he has.

Great card for the money. I was impressed when I installed it into my friend's computer. I think the 6600 is going to take it's place in this generation of cards.

Got a 9600Pro myself, like it a lot.
One thing I find nice is the quality of all DX9 Radeons.
My brother got a 6800 recently, and it cannot do 6xAA, only 4xAA. So games actually look sharper on my card. In fact, even 4xAA already looks slightly better on the Radeon imho, probably because the Radeon has gamma-corrected AA, and the GeForce does not.
He gets 3 times the framerate though :)
