My 7900GT

I got it on Tuesday, I believe, and when I put it into my computer, the monitor would stay blank.
The computer would turn on and act normal, even the fan on the 7900GT started up and seemed to be working fine. The only thing, as I've stated, is that the monitor would stay in "sleep" mode and be blank.

I swapped in 2 other cards and the monitor worked just fine.

I'm 99% sure it's my power supply, (I've ordered a 500W one that should arrive on Friday), being that it's 350W, but I just want to consult the [H] techies to be certain.

Am I right? It's the power supply, right?

Thanks!

How many amps is it on the 12v rail? At least 18 or more? Is it dual rail? Most computer systems won't use more than 300 watts even on a dual core burn even at 2800 mhz. I can do a dual burn and run intensive graphics and I burn just around 350 watts.

Goddammit. I had a picture of the sticker on the side of the power supply, but I deleted it earlier today and I don't really feel like opening it up again.

Um. From what I remember, in the +12V part, it said 18.

I don't think that's enough for the 7900GT, since the 7900GT needs to be connected directly into the power supply.

If it helps any, the power supply is a Dell. >.<

that doesnt sound power supply related at all. hell, a computer with a 250 watt psu can boot up with a 7900gt. i think there are some other people having the same problem. in fact another thread i read that person also had a dell. i think the thread was at anandtech forums if i am not mistaken.

You need to connect the pci-express power slot, also today I figured out you remembered that I needed to connect the cpu cicuity power supply, haha wasted 5 hours trying to do it though.

Well, the manual states that 22A on the +12V rail is required to use it on my computer, and my computer falls short with 18A. I assumed it was the power supply, and I'm still fairly certain it is. Keep in mind this thing is about 3 years old, now, and runs quite a few things... most of which I tried unplugging and only plugging it into the videocard and the other required items inside my computer. Obviously, it didn't work.

What do you think it is?

I'm not an Anandtech forum-er, so I can't search for the thread you're talking about. Wish I can, though... but even if I did, I wouldn't know where to start. lol

i think it would still boot up. you might have problems under load. anandtech ran a 7800gtx with a 250watt psu that had 14 amps on an hp computer. they had no problems during benchmarks. of course it would be stupid from a reliability stndpoint to use a weak psu for long term use.

Well, I returned from fucking around with the Motherboard bios with different settings, blah blah... and after nearly having a heart attack after my HDD "stopped functioning", I fixed that problem but alas... still no picture on the monitor (I had to use my X800XL for all the fixing).

:'(

Dells suck.

EDIT: Oh, and I completely forgot I took a picture of the PS while I was in there:

Did you order a Dell power supply? I have read that Dell power supplies and motherboards are proprietary. If this is true, you will not be able to buy just any power supply and make it work.

If you do a search on Google for "Dell proprietary power supply" all kinds of stuff will come up.

Longshot here considering the power supply comments but one thing I noticed with my 7900GT is that if I used the DVI port closest to the top of the card and flipped from port to port with my KVM, when I switched back to the 7900GT system, I'd get no video. I switched DVI ports and it's been working fine since. Which DVI port are you connected to?

the power supply is not the problem. it has more than enough 12v amps. it has dual 12v lines and 350 watts. unless you have more than one hard drive that psu is plenty strong enough to run a 7900gt.

I too don't think it's the psu. I had a no name brand rated 20A pushing my dual core oc'd along with my 6800GT oc'd and many other drives at the same time and yet it had no problem and never once cut off due to excessive high amp use.

Were you using RivaTuner with your old card?

If so, put your old card back, load Windows and unistall RivaTuner and its NVStrap driver.

It happened to me when I upgraded from 6800GT to 7800GT.

had the same problem with my 380watt and a 6800GT

its def. the power supply.

can you easilly return a power supply if you don`t like it? Maybe just order a Fortron or Seasonic.

Some people say a strong 12V rail helps like maybe the single rail 550w from Enermax at monarch computer

ITS NOT THE PSU. that psu has enough watts and WAY MORE than enough amps on the 12v to power a 7900gt.

NO ITS NOT unless his psu is defective. that psu could easily power a 7900gt.

you have TWO 12v rails for a total of 36 amps. you dont have to belong to anandtech just look in the forums.

Just in case anyone was wondering, the card had a capacitator that wasn't making contact. He sold the card to me and I recieved it like this.

I mailed it back to him and he is supposed to be RMA'ing it as he told me he couldn't refund my $300.00. I just didn't want anyone to get confused thinking it was the power supply.

it took that long to notice that. i would have seen that before i even put it in my machine. :p anyway i told you it wasnt the power supply. everybody always wants to blame the psu. :D

Is that an eVGA card? Believe it or not, but I went through 4 RMA's with the 7800's... The corner capacitors looked like that... but they worked... except one that had a capacitor that was complete broken off when I opened up the box. I could hear it rattling before I opened it.

There is also a chance that he might have actually bumped it when installing it in his computer without realizing it and that caused it. The G70 series mobos are the easiest to break compared to old school cards... I never saw this many problems with them.... but I love them when they work :)

*edit HOLY COW!! That is one of the beefy capacitors... wouldn't that be harder to knock off? The ones that I had problems with were little fragile looking ones. Still... that sucks.

It is actually one of the smaller caps. I guess he just overlooked it before selling it to me. When I went to RMA it, eVga had told me the card was already registered under the OP so I sent it back to him and haven't heard from him in the last few days. Go figure.

Dude, all you had to do is have him log in and unregister it. I unregistered my 7800's when I sold it on eBay. :(

Wow, I didn't know you could do that. Too late now, I guess. :(

Well, hopefully you will still get your stuff. I am sure everything will turn out okay... I read somewhere that only a small percentage... maybe like 5% of people like to rip people off. LoL. "adam corolla in the a.m." So the other 95% are pretty honest...

1. If you notice he sold you a broken card, you should have a sense of what kind of trader he is.
2. With 80+ heatware, You should ask him for a refund first before sent the card back to him.
3. Just go report to the local authorities asap.
