My evga 6800 Ultra is no more
Today, it died.
I can't even boot into windows with it in. I can see the BIOS screen and the starting windows screen but when I get to the point where it should show the login screen, I get a black screen and then a hard lock - it will not continue. Win XP safe mode will do the same thing.
I can boot into windows with a spare PCI VGA video card I keep for emergencies like this - very handy in a pinch !!
I've been noticing that I've been getting these strange BSOD (BAD_POOL_HEADER) with my 6800U in and they were getting more frequent. The funny thing is that it only happens in 2D mode at the desktop. It never happens in 3D. Viewing the call stack using windbg, I could see that it always happens doing some normal windows GUI calls like drawing windows, moving windows, etc.. Finally, today I couldn't even boot into windows. I did an emergency repair intstall of Win XP thinking it was a software issue but it wasn't.
Before somebody claims it's my PSU, I have an Enermax 465W PSU with 33A on the 12v+ rail. There's nothing wrong with my PSU - it's the video card for sure. The only other slight possibility is the motherboard but I severely doubt that.
Anyhow, at least I can boot into windows with my cr@ppy PCI VGA card but I can't play games with it
- at least no games made after 1996.
I'll be RMAing my 6800U to eVGA. They're ususally pretty good with RMAs from what I heard.
Wish me luck.
