My 39 frames per second performance increase

This post is a joke, because you

a) make fun of his post (this $hit is not helping) and

b) do not justify why you shouldn't enable vsync at all.

Anyways, you can't come out and just say "you shouldn't enable vsync" as a general rule. He experienced tearing. He needed vsync because he demanded high IQ. By SWITCHING MONITORS he ended up increasing his max FPS by 39. He doesn't say he increased his FPS by ENABLING VSYNC. Read the post again, maybe a little slower this time. Doesn't sound like a joke to me. If you have the hardware, enabling vsync will increase IQ by eliminating tearing.

How was I making fun of it? I was being sarcastic not making fun like you with other people's grammer. You like assume a lot of $hit. At least his inputing something useful to the post. Let me guess you probably A+ certified and proud and took ESOL classes at night. LOL go away.... There are lot of smart guys here and you are not 1 of them....

Have you actually gamed with it off or on? If you play it with vsync off. The critical parts like when you fire 20 rockets are flying around and exploding in your face. try it with vsync on. You'll drop more fps with it on than vsync off.

Enabling vsync higher refresh rates does not increase fps. okay brother.... That is why I find this post funny.

I never enable vsync and i don't ever get tearing unless i run at default refresh of 60hz, and it's not really tearing it's more of a wobulation. Either way vync has never helped me and i have never seen anything better come out of it.

This is what I'm saying. As I get no tearing more like a wooo in some parts when fps is so high. It doesn't do this all the time just in certain sections. And I never leave my monitor at 60hz. Why because my eyes hurt at this refresh rate. 75hz or bust.

the thread creator has a point, just some of you aren't literate enough to comprehend it.

a 60hz monitor can at max only display 60fps. 80fps 90fps, all wasted on that monitor
a 100hz monitor can at max on display 100fps. 80fps 90fps, all visable.

if your monitor is running at a 60hz refresh rate, you have no reason to brag that you can get 70 or higher fps. you are stupid for wasting the xtra $200 you spent on the card and not using it for gaming.

if i bought a x800 pe and said im gonna use it in my 1800+ athlon system, yall would call me a dumbass. those people who buy a powerful card and attach it to a crappy monitor are just as much of a dumbass.

But this is not the case. Your looking for lowest fps. If a game hovered at 60fps you'll not notice the slowdowns. Only time you notice slow downs is when it dips below 30fps or whatever fps you feel that it's too slow to game. So using a monitor with 60hz or 100hz will still give you 30fps in critical parts of a game. With vsync off it might give you 33fps.

I'd be shocked if you actually knew how v-sync worked.

V-sync is one of the known causes for the stuttering issues in games and i dont have an issue with tearing so why should i enable an option that limits my FPS?

You realize that without Triple Buffering to negate the FPS loss that with V-sync enabled you will have low frame rates in alot of graphics intensive areas because V-sync attempts to equalize your FPS with the set refresh rate of your monitor at that resolution and when your FPS drops down below that refresh rate its automatically divided into proportions of the actual FPS which in turns leads to choppy performance.

finally someone agrees with me.. vsync isnt that great...
it increases cpu usage, and if your video card cant output that constant 75fps to sync with the 75hz of your monitor, then what happens? well considering we cant change the refresh rate by a few hz instantaneously, your frames get cut in half! which sucks.... 37.5fps isnt too pretty either... so heres what i do...

suppose my monitor refreshes at 60hz at the resolution im playing it...
now depending on the game (video card usage), i set my max frames (if theres an option to do so, like in CS and HL2) to my refresh rate, or at least a multiple of it..

I play TFC (hl mod) at 120FPS and it is smooth.. i know you dont see all the frames, but theoretically this increases the games response time to your inputs (opposed to 60fps), it may be minimal, but its something
i play HL2 at 60FPS, barely any tearing..

and you may ask what if i drop below the 120fps or 60fps, is there tearing? yes, but its at the bottom of the screen since something like 57fps isnt too out of sync with my refresh rate.. if it was something like 30fps youd see tearing right through the middle of the monitor... so if you have control over your framerate in a game i highly reccomend doing this... im a performance freak and this is what finally satisfied me... vsync is just too pick if you cant maintain those frames... plus alot of people who switch from vsync off to vsync on say their game feels very 'delayed'

On my systems, running vsync doesn't half the frame rate, it runs in multiples of the original number.
60
52.5
45
37.5
30
etc...

play Aliens vs Predator, old game. On modern systems, rediculously high frame rates are possible. Now use the chaingun or smart gun without vsync.

as posted above, this thread is full of misinformation.

I always enable vsync and I adjust to settings that allow me to hit the 85fps (85hz) cap for anything I play.

those arent multiples of anything except 7.5, which i doubt is your refresh rate.. your frames should drop to that, it makes no sense.. how can 52.5fps sync up with 60hz, it cant.. 30fps can because its 1 frame every time the monitor refreshes twice, or 120 can because its 2 frames every time the monitor refreshes once.. those framerates you listed will theoretically produce tearing

Geforce 2 running UT GOTY edition with built in fps counter running the entire time. Call me a liar.
52.5 fps is 7.5fps less than 60, 7.5 is 1/8th of the refresh I run on my old system. I haven't noticed lower than 1/8th. It may be averaging between the 1/4 division of 60 when it changes between them quickly, however it does not drop directly to half as was stated in this thread.

I can tell you this much: I'm sick of having to play my games at 800x600 w/ my crappy 9600XT.

I've got a AIW9600 Pro, and I play HL2 at 1280x1024 at medium settings and get about 55fps all day long. Maybe push down your IQ a bit? Not sure what processor you're running, but you should be able to get better resolution than that.

Personally switching up from a Gateway EV710 to a Viewsonic A90f+ was one of the best investments I've ever made. I was flat amazed at how much better my games looked on this monitor compared to my old one. It's also used for a lot of TV/DVD viewing, so the UltraBrite button comes in really handy. I know there are better, but I got it for a decent price. A quality monitor is essential if you're going to build a gaming rig.

At 1600x1200 with a refresh rate of 99hz I may not have to enable V-sync at all. It's a significant upgrade for me. My crappy old Dell P780 was only able to refresh at 60. Plus it's a 4 inch size increase, from 16 to 20 viewable. Still waiting for it to get here, it arrives today. :D

Just got my monitor and all I have to say is wow, what a difference!! The screen size is just monsterous compared to my old Dell. So far I have tested both UT2004 and HalfLife 2, with my refresh rate being at 99hz, I haven't had to enable V-sync. I am ecstatic! I could have upgraded my motherboard/cpu combo for the same money, $560, I am glad I decided on the monitor. This has made a huge difference in my gaming. No pun intended :D

For real you shouldn't even enable vsync.

I typically disable vsync but with Doom3 and HL2 having it off can make the game look horrible when moving the camera.

The optimal solution is VSYNC enabled, your monitor at its highest refresh rate in each resolution, and Triple Buffering ENABLED.

Unfortunately the third stipulation isn't always available.

Amen....

I for one cannot stand tearing, when playing Far Cry it gets...butt ass ugly. I prefer to play at 1024x768 with 4x FSAA with everything to it's highest quality settings for online play, and the same settings except 1280x960 for single player...my monitor does 100hz+ at those resolutions so fps is plenty fast....Vsync IS a better quality image if the other settings are matched with it...

That's the point I was trying to get across to all these knucklhead's :D That's why I purchased such an expensive monitor. I like to play games with Image Quality at maximum. If your monitor cannot keep up with all the frames per second being rendered by today's video cards, v-sync is almost a must.

Yes. I can see a monitor at 60Hz, 70ish, 85Hz and 100Hz. I can tell the difference between all of them. I honestly can't tell above 100Hz. My monitor does over 120Hz and I can't tell the difference between that and 100Hz.

60Hz actually gives me headaches and 75Hz does the same although it takes longer. I have to have my monitor set at 85Hz or better or it bothers me.

Now in games I can't tell above say 75Hz. It's only looking at the Windows desktop and dialogue boxes that I can tell any kind of difference.

You gotta be joking. I seriously doubt that you would develop headache from low refresh rates alone. The ac mains current is 50-60 Hz, which is actually the "refresh rate" for what you see inside your house when you turn on the lights in the evening :)

If you're using CRTs electromagnetic radiaton is known to cause headaches. Use a Faraday shield or switch to LCDs.

My 42" Grand Wega III will only do 60 hz!

However, 1280x720 6xAA 16xAF = teh pwn on my X800 XT PE :)

To answer some of your questions:

1) How were you making fun of it? I thought you could figure this one out: You called his post a joke. Call it what you will, I say you made fun of his post. I must be CRAZY!

2) Let me read this back to you: "You like assume a lot of $hit...Let me guess you probably A+ certified and proud and took ESOL classes at night."

Do I need to say anything else, or can you figure out how dumb you sounded there. Actually, let me explain it. You said I assume a lot of $hit, and then you assumed a lot of $hit. yeah...

3) I'm not A+ certified and I am proud of that fact. I do have 3+ years experience working with computer hardware and software on a professional level.

4) "If you play it with vsync off. " <---- That isn't a sentence. "The critical parts like when you fire 20 rockets are flying around and exploding in your face. " <--- That isn't a sentence either.

5) "Enabling vsync higher refresh rates does not increase fps." That simply isn't true. If you have vsync on and your refresh rate is 60Hz, than your max fps is 60! If your refresh rate is 75, your max fps is 75! That sounds like an increase to me. Go figure.

The only dumb noises are coming from you. I wasn't assuming anything but okay whatever you say. Oh my goodness 3 years oh no. Try 15 years. If you think working at best buy is professional I suggest you come up the level of playing field. Lot of people here work in IT level. I already explained why this post was a joke. No need to repeat myself. Again this place is not for making fun of grammer. I suggest you goto a grammer forum or something. You might find more people to tease over there.

The most important part is that you would want the lowest fps to be higher than 30fps or whatever you feel uncomforable playing at. It does not matter if you set your vsync to 60hz or 100hz. When you enable vsync your lowest fps will always be higher than leaving vsync off. This is true for any video card owners. So leaving vsync on limits your fps no matter how high your your refresh rate is.

Marvelous said:

No one said enabling V-sync did not limit your frames per second. It will limit them to your monitors refresh rate, maximizing image quality.

If you're using CRTs electromagnetic radiaton is known to cause headaches. Use a Faraday shield or switch to LCDs.

It's not the same thing. CRT displays use phosphor in the tube that illuminates when excited by the electron gun. Because the phosphors have fade to them, they do not immediately go to black. If the electron gun does not re-scan the screen quickly enough, the eye detects the fading of the phosphors before they are fully illuminated again. This creates a strobing effect that can lead to headaches and eye strain.

Some people are more affected by this than others, so some will say 72-75Hz is absolute minumum, while others won't touch a CRT with a refresh rate below 85Hz.

Please be informed that all cathode ray tube monitors (and all other accelerated electron beam appliances) emit low-level X-ray radiation:

http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/consumer/TVRad.html

This is no problem when watching TV at normal viewing distance (a few metres), as the radiation intensity decreases with the distance from source squared. But spending 8 hours daily a couple of feet away from a hi-energy CRT monitor may be worse, I'm not sure.

Than what is the point of this topic? This guy is saying 100hz=100fps 60hz=60fps MaxFPS doesn't matter as much as lowest fps.

When enabling vsync it limits this lowest fps. So you would want this diabled. If you have a CRT than you want anything above 75hz because of eye strain. If you already have a fast card than enabling vsync to improve image quality is a given. But if you want faster fps you want vsync disabled. Not get a 100hz capable monitor. LOL While I like higher refresh rates it also degrades image quality on CRT's. 100hz looks so much more washed out than say 75hz or 60hz for that matter.

I have no idea why anyone wants to game higher than about 1024 X 768. Every time I have tried it in Battlefield I find the playability goes DOWN due to extremely tiny text on player names and the like. Everything is so damn SMALL!

I would take a 19" CRT running 800 X 600 @ 120hz anyday over one running 1600 X1200 @ 70. The res is nice but it does not add to my frag count. Being a smarter player than the next guy does. It's the in game moves and grooves that count for more than any resolution.

You have stated your opinion on how stupid this thread is in every damn post you have made in it. At what point do you realize you are just being an ass?

This thread is pointless.

I dont think the original post was pointless at all. I use Vsync in most of my games. As stated by alot of people, to each his own.

Now fighting and flamming the thread is pointless. Im not burning any bridges here, but come on guys. Just pick for yourself, cause there is no point fighting over who knows what or how much you know over someone else. We all here to learn from each other, lets not teach each other to fight. We get alot more thought into subjects when there are no wars going on =)

Vsync on = better image and more pleasent to watch (at least for me)
Vsync off = does not limit FPS to the Hz of your refresh rate. Tearing will happen, but if you can stand it, then so be it....by all means.

Its a good topic and I learned alot of info about the subject, (once you scroll through the flaming) i really thought i was like one of a handfull of people that use it.

I run most games at 1024x768 @ 85hz refresh. My desktop is 1152x864 @ 85hz. I can notice a difference between 75 and 85, but not really 85 to 100. I guess the diffference between the 75/85 is greater to my eyes. The only reason I use 85hz at 1024 is not because my monitor will not do 100hz at that reso, its cause I hate my monitor clicking to new refresh when ever I start or leave a game/app. Basically just lock all reso's to 85hz. Oh well if i get only 85fps, if it looks good to me, myself and I, thats all that really matters.

exactly my point. I don't even use Vsync on all games, but several of my favorites, the tearing is distracting. the muzzle flash of mini guns or smart guns in AvP, not nearly as distracting on Serious Sam. The problem I have is when someone comes in flaming because someone's opinion is different.

I suggest you reread my original post S-L-O-W-L-Y! I explained the 39fps increase was from a visual perspective only. I personally want the best image quality possible while gaming, and am willing to sacrifice a few fps to achieve that. I really don't care at what settings you game at. If you enjoy games in spite of "visual tearing" so be it. My new monitor is allowing me to see more on the screen, not only because it is bigger, but because of its high refresh rates.
