Okay, so I just dropped in a Athlon 64 3000+, skt 754 Venice. I have a athlon XP innovatek watercoolibf kit with a socket 754 adaptor. Arctic silver 5 applied properly. When I boot the machine and go into BIOS, the thing is 100 degrees C!!! The board is a DFI LanParty 250gb.

I can touch the block and around the perimeter of the processor and it's not hot at all. Also, I can boot into Windows fine. I've had Athlon XPs burn up on me before, and this doesn't make any of the noises it did before it went.

Should I just assume the temp sensor is fuxored? The PC's been off and apart for quite some time, and handling hasn't always been very nice. Should I just buy a cheap temp probe at Home Depot and use that for temps, or should I try to get the temp directly from the core with an app like MBM5?

I thought Athlon64's had a shutoff around 70C unless manually disabled? You sure that's not 100F?

The BIOS clearly says 100C, but I'm really hoping it somehow got switched to F :-p.
Don't think that's the case, though. The other temps are all accurate (low 20s) for my setup.

You said that you can touch the heatsink around the perimeter of the cpu and it's not hot at all? It sounds like your heatsink isn't mounted correctly...check it and make sure it is seated flush with the processor's heat spreader. I would say check your AS5 but you said it is applied properly.

Your heatsink should be very hot to the touch if it is doing it's job and drawing heat away from the processor. I was thinking bad sensor at first but then I read that your heatsink isn't hot.

I'm now getting a solid 43C on water. Hopefully a BIOS update and letting the paste solidify will get that processor 10C lower :-p

43C is more like it. My Athlon 64 3400+ skt 754 Venice is at 45C idle, 54C full load and that's in a Shuttle XPC with the stock ICE heat pipe cooling. It should be dropping a little lower in the next few hours.

Whats the room temp the rig is in?

It's pretty warm today in Philly. Ambient room temp is probably around 80F. There are no fans or air conditioning on :D

That is almost identical to what I set my A/C on when I did a burn-in on my 3400+ Venice a few days ago. I set the thermostat on 79F which is pretty warm and my cpu maxed out at 54C with Prime95 cooking for over 5 hours. They are some nice cpu's.
