Finally get to put this computer to work!

I was thinking of getting that LCD (even though it will make my wallet a bit lighter than I'd like - if ya know what I mean) and I was wondering if the power butotn light is like the Samsung 204B in that it is blue, not green. Or, is there no light at all? I haven't been able to tell, lol.

Other than that, how do you like the monitor? How is the stand? Looks a bit strange, not as sexy as the Dell 2407FPW, but then again the dell in isn't so sexy just because it's a dell.

Ah, while I'm on the subject, how would you compare it to the dell? Also, can you try the component inputs and see if they bleed/give fuzzy images like the dell does.

Sorry, I'm trying to decide between this and the dell, which is a lot cheaper.

That is the monitor I wanted to get. I didn't have the money and had to make do with a 204B. Damn, that is one nice monitor.

The LED is green, just like the older series monitors.

I like the stand so far. There is clearance under it to slip a few cables through, and it works great to hold the Mac keyboard you see in the pic. It pivots, tilts and swivels really nice too.

I've seen the xbox360 through the component and ran that at 1080i and it looked amazing, but then again, I haven't seen the Dell offering in person.

Also, I was skeptical about buying this because of the rumored "input lag" however it doesn't exhibit any of it. I did purchase a third party DVI-D dual link cable though, the one packed with the monitor was DVI-D single link. Just something to keep in mind.

DL-DVI would serve you no additional benefits than a single link would for this monitor, same goes for very 1920x1200 monitor out there at the moment (until lcd can handle 14 bit and beyond for each colour).

sexy looking monitor indeed :) great specs too it has. how much is it worth?

Great to hear that you really like the monitor! I am very tempted to buy the silver version, but I am debating on whether I should wait for the 245T to be released. The problem is, who knows when the 245T will be coming out, and from the pics i've seen the 245T will only have a black stand. You can get a silver screen, but the stand will still be black. Yuck.

I think I may have just made my decision. ;)

It ranges from $1299 to $1399 from what I saw, and my friend also has one, said he paid $1500 when it was first released.

Ah, the 245T? It's a 30" screen, not a 24" screen. Not only is it larger, but the resolution is only 1920x1200 so IMO it's not worth it.

As for the power light on the 244T being green, well, blah. I would have LOVED a blue button like the 204B has. It going to suck having a rig thats black and blue, speakers that are black and blue, a black and silver keyboard/mouse, only to have a black/green monitor, lol. Ah well, what can you do?

As for the size of the sucker. How big is it? I've been using a 19" CRT (1600x1200) for many many years now and I'm thinking of jumping to LCD with this (244T) monitor, but it just seems so big!

About the component inputs, people say that the Dell 2407 looks fuzzy when using component inputs. But, if you say the 244T is sharp and clear then... I don't know what to tell the dell people, lol - only too bad! =)

Also another question, a very important one! It's a bit hard to explain but I think you'll understand what I mean. Does the 244T have a function where you can, for example, play a game at 1600x1200 resolution and *not* have it stretched to be 1900x1200, but instead display black bars on the sides? Or even something smaller and not have it be stretched both vertically and horizontally, but be surrounded by a black box?

305T is the samsung 30 incher (2560x1600), 245T is the 24 incher (1920x1200) and may come with blue led based on the demo monitor

edit - samsung 245T...not 2405T sorry,... and Dell 2405fpw... not 2405T

2405T being the Dell monitor.

Sorry, the info I found on the 245T was wrong. It's the next 24", as the name suggest. However, both seem to be using the same panel so the only difference is the framing. No need to shell out more $, lol.

Also, can you post a straight-on shot with the monitor at both it's lowest and highest heights? If only 1 picture is possible, then I'd prefer the lowest height, as I like keeping my displays low.

Thanks a ton! I'm looking forward to buying the display.

Oh, and another question. Have you watched any DVDs on it yet? The Cnet review slammed it for having crappy colors during DVD playback, yet good colors during gameplay. Of course it said there were pixelations on DVD playback, but thats DVD technology's fault - DVDs have always shown granulation and noise on higher ends monitors, CRTs included. Anyways, can you comment on DVD playback?

Again, thanks. You're answers will help me feel better about laying down a grand for this display.

Yes, in the menu it's referred to as Picture->(submenu)Size, "Wide" or "4:3."

I haven't had a chance yet to watch a DVD on it, too busy gamin! :D

Oh it's black, the flash just reflects at that angle and made it look silver in that image.

You're gaming on linux? Hehe. At least that looks like windowmaker.

Anyways, don't you notice the image lag? People are complaining complaining complaining and it's scaring me away from a widescreen monitor. I noticed you picked up a dual-link DVI cable in order to get rid of the lag, but I'm wondering if you could switch back to the single link DVI cable and compare. Also, do you know if the monitor supports dual-link DVI? I realize that the plug will accept a dual-link cable, but does the hardware actually work with it? Because this input lag issue is scaring me off, lol.

That and I heard something about the 7900GT not supporting the "boxed/bordered" output.

What graphics card do you have?

It's Blackbox for windows, not linux. Looks like it, but it's still winxp. :)

I don't notice any difference with the cable. The manual says the included cable is DVI-D, but looking at them side by side...

I'm using 2x 7950gx2s in quad-sli.

Yep that top one is clearly single-link. DVI-D doesn't mean DVI-Dual by the way, it means DVI-Digital.

So yea... damn... but you're having no input lag?

Not that I can see, nope.
I'm used to gaming on 19" samsung 915n, and before that a 21" hitachi crt, with a trinitron tube in it. (Did 1600x1200@100hz)

Do you know anyone else who's got a 244T? Do they have any input lag?

Sorry, just real worried about buying a $1k LCD only to be stuck with it and not use it.

Ah, by the way, can you set the refresh rate to higher than 60Hz with the DualLink DVI cable?

Repeat: Dual-link dvi cables does nothing more to 244T than a sl-dvi would .... the extra pins of dl-dvi are simply not utilized.

Why would you say that?

In order to achieve a higher bandwidth dual link is needed, with that bandwidth you have enough room to raise the refresh rate above 60Hz. The monitor seems to support dual link so I see no reason why, using dual link won't allow you to raise your refresh.

Although, yes, I do understand what you're saying, technically.

The maximum frequency on a single-link is capped at 165 MHz (3.7 Gbit/s) and WUXGA (1920x1200 res) at 60Hz uses 154 MHz. So there's not enough room to bump up the refresh rate. However, you will notice that HDTV (at 1920x1080) at 85 Hz with GTF blanking uses 2x126MHz and needs dual-link. Now, seeing as how the 244T is claiming to be all HDTV supportive I would assume that using the increaced bandwidth from duallink you would be able to raise the refresh rate. Thus dual-link is not useless on the 244T.

HDMI 1.1 (Type A) supporting 1080p which is essentially sl-dvi connection plus digital audio are used in 1920x1080 hd lcd tvs (and hdmi input on the 24 inch BenQ). Pin to pin there are no additional pins of the dl-dvi. Additional pins compatible with dl-dvi, would be HDMI type B connection.

1080p movies are usually 30fps, 60Hz is 2x the required refresh rate.

Besides that, 244T and all other 1920x1200 23 and 24 inchers lcd monitors do not support more than 60Hz at native resolution..

Further proof... the chipset doing the decoding on the monitor do not have connections to the additional 6 pins of the dl-dvi cable.

Aha! Well that's what I was asking out, either in this thread or another - whether the monitor actually supported dual-link or if the pins were just placeholders.

Do you know what the chipset is and where you got that information from? I'd like to look up some other things.

BTW, what monitor are you using?

some of the chipsets used for 23/24 inchers...pixelworks pw172 chipset , genesis gm1601 and FLI5962H......

Hi guys.. yes i noob here, but im just doing my head in with my 244T and this was an interesting post that seemed relevant to my problem..

Here goes..

I have the 244T in Silver. Had it about 6 months now. I upgraded my PC this week (AMD 3800+ Dual Core, XFX Geforce 7900GT Extreme, ASUS SLI Premium Mobo etc etc)

My intention with upgrading was to find a suitable graphics card that would display this screens native resoution in 1920 x 1200 through DVI-D. However I cannot get this display to go over 1280 x 1024!!??

I've installed and re-installed the Samsung Syncmaster 244T Drivers, Im running the latest Nvidia ForceWare (91.31), but still cannot get it above this resolution. I've called Samsung.. they could not really help me either.. Reading from above, it appears that I should not need run a dual link DVI Cable either.. Then I read "7900GT not supporting the "boxed/bordered" output" I did not know of this. When I change the resolution above 1280 x 1024 the screen does go outside of the border and I have to move the mouse around to see the whole screen (#%$#)

Any ideas :) ?

Thanks.

Was this on a fresh install?

If not, i highly recommend a fresh install. Changing that much hardware screws with windows.

Call nVidia.

While you're at it ask them about what they're doing to fix the output scaling issue, the box/bounding thing I mentioned before. Ask them if they've included a fix in the next driver release, post 91.33.

I don't know if you saw the link I forwarded to you, but the output scaling thing doesn't work on the 7900gt (possibly gtx as well) even if you've selected the option in the display properties. This must be due to some sort of bug as it works on all of the 7800 cards.

So, I'm thinking you should call nvidia and ask about your resolution issue, and while you're at it ask about the boxing thing and see if they're even aware of it. If a fix isn't in the works I'm going straight to ATI.

Keep me/us posted as this issue has personal relevance to me since I'm planning on getting SLI 7900GTs and the 244T.

I HAD a silver 244t and loved every time I use it. I was using the dvi-d cable that it came with and have noticed no lag whatsoever regardless of what I was doing whether playing bf2 or graw or graphics work, no lag. Unfortunetly I had an seperate issue with the monitor and samsung didn't have one in stock, so I got a refund and upgraded to a 32" instead! :D

I would recommend this monitor to anyone.

Outrig, what graphics card are you using at the moment?

I will test the monitor elsewhere, that way it eliminates the screen, otherwise I guess Im
getting a different video card! :( Never once did I read anywhere about this issue prior to choosing this card. oh well.. thanks for the feedback guys. I can play games in 1280 x 1024 with everything maxed out, but for day to day desktop use, the res is just too low.

Bez, it can't be the screen because I was using 7900gt just like you albit dual 7900gts but that shouldn't make a diff. I just used the cable that came with the monitor and in the display control panel I just move the slider until its 1900 x 1200. Like you said, try it on another comp so you eliminate the screen as the issue as it likely is not the cause. Forget about using dual dvi or whatever, just use the one that came with the screen. it worked perfect for me.

Yeah mate, thats exactly what I did. Im using the cable that came with the monitor. When I move the slider to 1920 x 1200 the whole screen goes 'outside' the viewing area and I have to move the mouse around to see the whole page. Even in the control panel (Nvidia) it says that my native resolution is 1280 x 1024. I cant work it out. Personally I think its a dud monitor, but Im going to eliminate this today by testing it on another system.

Outrigger

Im guessing you still use those SLI 7900GTs. If so can you test something out for me?

I've heard that the 7900GTs don't properly support the output scaling mode. What I mean is, in the nVidia control panel you set this option: http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a54/spikedzombies/adjustment.jpg
then go run a game in a less than native resolution, such as 1024x768 (for example) and it doesn't get stretched to the screen size, rather it has a black box around it and displays at 1024x768.

I had heard that it doesn't work on the 7900-series card, even though the option is in the panel. However someone told me that he thinks it's a problem specific to his display, a VX2025WM.

This functionality is important for me if I buy a 244T, especially considering that I will set it up with SLI 7900GTs.
