Hey guys,

I finally jumped ship and got a C2D E6420. I'm trying to OC a bit to get more umph out of it. From doing multiple searches, it looks like C2D's are easy to overclock but I'm not having much luck. I have a ASRock Penryn1600SLI-110db motherboard and I started with a simple increase of the FSB. When I set it to 300 and machine wont post (this mb has a great feature that if you restart 3 times and it doesn't post, it reset the FSB for you). I suspect is has something to do with the FSB to memory ratio but I don't see an option for that.

I have 2GB of Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 ram. When I set everything to auto, this it what it looks like:

Using the OC utility that came with the board, I can push the FSB to 320. Haven't tried anything else. I noticed that my ram is running slower than it should be. Anybody with this motherboard able to point me in the right direction? I'm just used to messing with Athlon 64's so this is new to me.

to be totally honest you could have gotten a E7200 for cheaper. I just picked one up today and it runs nicely at 3.8ghz. I got it for $129.99
 
Weird pricing, E6420 is $175 on NewEgg.
E8400 is just a hair above that price...
 
First dont use software to overclock. Go into the bios. In there up the FSB up ur voltage. I would say start from 320 and work your way up. I know on my old E4300 I had to up the voltage on my NB as well.
 
When I set the FSB in the BIOS to 300, it doesn't post. That's why I'm confused. The memory timings on my default pic don't look correct.
 
I actually read through that one already. I think I'm getting my issue with the FSB to RAM ratio. My mobo might have it worded differently on the BIOS.


edit. Maybe I should've posted this in the overclocking forum, can any mod that sees this move it?
 
First, set your fsb:memory ratio to 1:1 manually. Right now on Auto is probably set to like a 3:2 ratio, so once you start overclocking anything over 266 FSB your ram is going over 800Mhz fast.

Next set the FSB to 334 in the BIOS & try booting up from there.
at 300-332 you might be in a "FSB hole", where the motherboard still has you on the 266 strap which makes it harder on the motherboard.

if 333Mhz works and you go up some from there, you might even want to try 400FSB. 400x8 = 3.2Ghz and at 1:1 ratio your ram will be at ddr2 800.
 
I just got the PC back together last night so I didnt have much time to play with it. when I get home, I'll try to find out how to mess with the ratios.
 
I set the FSB to 333mhz, I manually put my ram speed to 800. I upped the CPU voltage to 1.352. The PC boots at 2.66ghz but the ratio is still at 6:5. Don't know how to change this. I took some pics of the BIOS. This mobo has a setting for a hyper transport link....I thought that was an AMD thing only.

Any ideas? Going to see if there's a new bios out.
 
I flashed the bios, the only thing i see different is the as ability to lower the multiplier. I'm still puzzled by this motherboard. Does anybody else have this motherboard?
 
hypertransport bus is used between the northbridge & southbridge chips. (not between the CPU & other chips like on AMD)

Ok now try doing the same with 400FSB!

Set FSB to 400 and make sure your ram is at 800Mhz... should be 1:1 ratio.
 
I finally got it going, it was the ram speed that was keeping me down. I manually set it to 4-4-4-12 at 800mhz. It still wouldn't post at 400 but at 385 (1.4v) it did. So I'm content at 3.09 ghz. Should I try to go higher?

Also according to everest, my RAM (Crucial Ballistix 2GB), has a high performance profile (DDR2-800 4-4-4-12) and a high frequency profile (DDR2-1000 5-5-5-15). Is there any benefit setting it up as DDR2-1000?

Not bad. Some of the early C2D's didn't like going much above 3Ghz. I had an e6600 that could do 8x400 (3.2Ghz) with tons of volts or 9x333 = 3Ghz with a reasonable amount of juice, so I kept it at an even 3Ghz.
