I'm going to upgrade my AGP card, right now i have a "dreadful but got me through long enough" nvidia geforce 4 mx440. I want something that will be able to handle games like FEAR and Oblivion, but also not take a big chunk of my wallet away. Any suggestions?

hehe may be pentium 3??? hehehe
i thik i will go try if oblivion will works on my p3 too..
after the 9700 pro arrive!:)

Why is the 7600GT listed as "OK" it is faster than the 7800GS, runs cooler, is more efficient and cheaper i would say thats more than "OK"

If you have anything less than an athlon 64 2800+ i wouldnt bother with any of those.

Also what kind of power supply do you have? These cards require a little more than your average PSU that comes with most cases.

The 7800GS has more pixel pipelines; and i'm guessing it has more vertex shaders, too.

I would go with the 7600gt if you are running on that processor. The 7800gs has more memory bandwidth, but the core is slower overall.

You're wasting time on a OLD CPU. I wouldn't put anything other than 9700pro or something of that nature.

7600gs at best.

Seems a bit expensive... Over here, AGP 7600GTs are going for around AU$200. To give you a point of comparison, an 8800GTX is AU$900-950, so I would've expected the 7600GT to be selling for ~$130.

You've got to be kidding... 2.5GHz was top of the P4 line when the 9700pro released.

Anyway, he's far better off with a $200 video card than he is trying to upgrade both the CPU and GPU on the same budget.

He's right, plus the 7600GT requires less power than the 7800GS. I know the 7800GS requires atleast a 450 watt power supply.

I was at LAN party a week or so ago. We gave the host a 7600GT as a birthday gift. His rig is an AMD 64 3800+ dual core with a gig of ram on an ECS board. On 3dmark '05, he benched 5,800. One of his favorite rivals had a rig with an AMD 64 3200+ single core, 2 gigs of ram and a 7800GS OC'ed. He benched only 5,500 on 3dmark '05. The 7600GT was PCIE, and the 7800GS was AGP, though. Honestly, I was really impressed with the 7600GT, and I'm an ATI guy.

I'd go for the 7600GT, because with the 7800GS, you'll probably need a new power supply. And if you upgrade that, you might as well just go for the X1950PRO. But that's a much bigger chunk out of your wallet.

How fast do you wanna go ??? How much money do you wanna spend ???

1 more vote for the 7600GT

p4 2.5 isn't too old to put a 7600GT to good use. Is it a 2.0 overclocked to 2.5? Didn't think they made 2.5 processors...

p4 2.53 on a 533 FSB netburst is old. ANCIENT! This thing is nearly 5 years old.

It doesn't have the umph unless you like 30fps.

Minimum should 3.2 ghz with 800fsb if you really want to stick a 7600gt in there.

Putting more money into a old system is waste when you can buy a new athlon for $100 which includes mobo - PCI-E that makes P4 look like p3.

Eh, I dunno. 'Oblivion' is really mostly GPU-limited, unless you are running a Crossfire or SLI system. Then, it rapidly become CPU limited (which, to be fair, is REALLY rare in games).

For this performance level? GPU all the way.

As to the 7600GT - I'm an ATI guy, myself. However...that's a really, REALLY nice card for the price. I had the 'base' eVGA model (not the KO), and it didn't have a fan control. IE., it ran at 100% all the time. It wasn't...awful. But, then, I have a "silent" system, and it ended up just being too much noise for me. Otherwise (if I'd bought one with a fan control), I'd probably have been happy with it - the performane was EXACTLY what I needed to play 'Oblivion' and 'FEAR;Combat' (never tried the single-player FEAR).

the ati version of the 7600 is the x1600 series. You ultimately might get system bottle neck since these newer cards are faster than every other part of your system.

Well i dont want to spend no more than 200 bucks on it, I just need something thats fairly cheap, and will work well enough to play some newer games. I also plan to upgrade my RAM and my Hard drive. the 7600 looks like a good deal, ill do a bit more shopping around, maybe ask a few people i know who are into computers as well. My system is quite old, about 4 years, its a sony vaio rz22g. Its gotten me this far, i just wanna throw a bit of cash into it, get it running a little bit better before i actually save up to buy a new pc or build one (though id probably fail..heh)

You can buy a mobo and processor and keep everything you have in your system including memory.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103567 $53

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813138269 $60

Buy a 7600GT pci-e for $100 after rebates -10 rebate.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130062

You can have all this for $220 which would be leaps and bounds ahead of your p4 @ 2.53

sell your old motheboard and cpu and get some money back $30-50

Or you can even buy a 1950gt would cream a 7600gt for $130 after rebates.

Now you can upgrade later if you wish. You can get a x2 processor later if games ever start to really utilize dual processors

I used to own MX440 on my old HP A250N pavlion, it has a P4HT 2.6ghz..

I upgraded to a 9700 PRO, and it rocks. works fine with HL2 at 1024 res, i think you should be good, don't waste more money than you should, it's an old system, I would leave it as it is....

9700 pro upgrades probably cost 50 at most?

ok man seriously dont upgrade anything but the video card, and dont spend more than $100.
Most of the standards have changed from the system you have for example agp is dead the new standard is pci-express x 16, the main ram speeds are ddr2 at 667 or 800 mhz some are even higher. The best speed ram you would be running in that system u have now is ddr 400mhz. The other thing you need to know is that most boards that support pci-x x 16 and ddr2 ram don't support the older standards there are onlu 2-3 boards that will run an agp and pci-x and ddr and ddr2 ram. When you upgrade you will replace the mobo, ram, cpu(if you want it depends on the socket type you have now, if its a 775 your cpu could be run on a newer board), and the video card.

So this is why I reccomend that you don't spend more than $100 on the card now because you wont be able to utilize it in your new system when you build it, its really throwing your $ away now so spend the least possible while still getting a decent increase in performance.

With that in mind check these links out.
