Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy a new display but i'm having a hard time deciding between the 23'' Asus MX239H and the 24'' Dell UltraSharp U2412M IPS monitors.

I know the Dell seems to have backlight bleed problems, but i'm unable to find reviews about the Asus either...

I would say my usage would be: 50% for Office work/Web browsing; 25% Movies; 25% Gaming.

Any pointers? Thanks a lot.

keep in mind, these two monitors aren't in the same price range. you can get the mx239h (if you can still find it) for under $200. you lose 120 vertical pixels with the mx239h, and backlight bleed is possible on any monitor. the mx239h i have has some bleed at the bottom edge. the panel on the mx239h has purple ips glow, if that bothers you.

the asus doesn't have much in the way of physical adjustments (tilt only), and there's no vesa mount. as an inexpensive general-use ips monitor, it's pretty good bang for the buck.

tft central has reviews of both monitors.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm in Europe and here you'll find all sorts of price distortions :D Where i'm buying it, they cost almost the same (around € 250 ~ $330).

It's not that i'm picky about displays (i'm used to "crap" laptop monitors for over a decade now), but i want to make the best decision when purchasing.

I love the Asus design and, while i feel the Dell is a all-around better monitor, i read so many complaints about it over the internet it makes me doubt...

more people complain about the dell probably because more people own the dell than the asus.

with the two prices the same, i'd go with the dell. it has better adjustability, more inputs (dvi and displayport in addition to vga, whereas the asus only has hdmi and vga), greater vertical resolution, and likely better support not much color performance and picture quality difference between the two.

i love my u2412m

it was a gigantic upgrade and one of the best purchases I ever made.

Hi, I think livefastdieyoung commenting on the reviews on TFT central may be getting the ASUS product confused. Jungl3 is refering to the newly released Asus MX239H not the ML239H which is an older model and is the one reviewed on TFT Central.

I've just ordered one of the new ones today (and yes I am also a bit annoyed that it does not have direct DVI - although you can by HDMI to DVI cables - and why it doesn't have mount capability is beyond me) so I can provide an impression in the next day or two. I was interested because it is pretty much frame free and I am building a 3 monitor set up for gaming so smaller bezel the better. I will keep you appraised.

oops, you're right. but my comments about the loss of vertical resolution vs. the u2412m, the possibility of backlight bleed, and the minimal physical adjustments still hold.

livefastdieyoung, your comments do still hold water. Jungl3, you don't say what graphics card you are using? If you are 25% gaming, then a higher vertical resolution available on one of the models as pointed out by livefastdieyoung on modern games my impact performance.

If you are playing something that is graphically intensive like Battlefield 3 on ultra settings or the new crysis 3 then thats something to think about if you dont have a kickass graphic card. The extra vertical will have implications. Also, on a 24 inch monitor, will the extra resolution make office documents too small and perhaps you want to think of a 27 inch monitor? Maybe one thats not quite the latest model even if you're on a budget?

From a personal point of view, I am not a touch typist and I am definately not someone who plays games without staring at my keyboard so lack of vertical adjustment doesnt bother me as I would set it to the lowest so I can both see the screen and the keyboard easily.

Also, because I want three monitors for gaming and run a GTX670 anything more than 1080p vertical would mean I would most liekly have to upgrade to SLI immediatley if I want high settings whereas with a 1080 set up I can wait for a bit before plugging in a second Graphics card.

Reviews on response times are varied on this new Asus monitor so I will report back to see if it is ghosting free. If it's not I'll return and source an alternative but for looks alone I hope I can FPS on it.

if gpu horsepower is an issue, a 1920x1200 monitor can always be run at 1920x1080, it'll just have the black bars at the top and bottom. some games might even give you a wider viewport with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

I'm really liking the Asus MX239H. Does anyone know when it will be available in the US or where to buy it?

The U2312hm is also a 16:9 1080p alternative to the U2412M. Both great monitors but very similar. I believe the panel and issues are the same. The U2312HM doesn't show the problems as much because it's slightly smaller. The U2412M apparently has more bleed and glow because of the extra pixels. For gaming, the U2312HM has less input lag. Some reviews even say it has superior color performance before and after calibration as well. Reviews claim that the U2312HM is too bright, but I've got mine calibrated to 72 cd/m2 and it's great. There isn't an issue with the brightness or buzzing, at least on newer revisions. And it's cheaper. Can't speak for the Asus though.
