Mx1000 Vs Mx510

Many weeks ago I had piped up about the razor diamonback coming out.. I was the proud owner of the MX510. Many scolded me for mentioning the razor... cause every one was abuzz about the MX1000. I started reading... about it. I read reviews.. I read an article in my local paper from a reporter who used it for a month. And then finally at work the mx1000 came in.. and I saw it and found out I could get it for a nice discount and decided then and there to buy it.

As someone who has always been a fanatic about his gaming mouse.
I had owned the original boomslang. I payed 100 for it. Spending 80 dollars was a steal for me.

I play FPS and RTS and RPGs.

My mx510 was fine I had no issues with it.. Except for the wire.
I was using a Metal etched Mousepad that costs 15 dollars. Its large with an etched surface that allows an optical mouse to track 10x better then any other surface.

So I did some gaming with my Mx510 before I installed the MX1000.
Played UT2004. Did some sniping got warmed up. Then I unpacked my Mx1000. First thing I noticed.. It has an on off switch. Nice.

I put it on and amazingly it was nearlly fully charged out of the box!
unsinstalled the old Logitech software. Disconnected my Mx510.

I did notice the Mx1000 was a litle heavier. I connected the transciever/charger. IT can send a signal without the ac cord connected. But you need to connect the ac adapter to recharge the battery. Put the mouse on.. and within seconds winodows found the mouse... And without installing the logitech software I noticed it was already smoother then the mx510! I couldn't believe it at first. I thought
I must have been dreaming but yup it was smoother even though it was heavier it TRACks and glides whole hell of alot smoother.

I installed the software rebooted and proceeded to test it with Doom3,
UT 2004, Even played old school q3 ,Sacred ,War 3 and in every game it felt better. The added weight made control just downright perfect.

Oh and as to some suggestions that if you lift the mouse and it lags..
Sorry I didn't experience any of that. I would lift the mouse put it downand the lazer would automatically track again instantly. No lag no slowdown.

I must note I played My Mx510 with the acceleration settings ON HIGHEST possible. Same for the Mx1000. Its speed and responsiveness is so much better it actually did take me a few days to adjust. But take it from a Hardcore Mouser The MX1000 more then does the job.

IF you are like myself and 79 dollars for a mouse doesn't scare you I couldn't possibly recommend it more. I just want Logitech to release a wireless gaming keyboard that is independent of the mx1000. :)
:D

I think that if somebody likes the MX700, they'll love the MX1000, but I was surprised to see that you enjoyed the MX1000 coming from your MX510. Personally, I hate wireless mice for gaming. The weight makes my aim sluggish, and the MX1000 weighs even more than the MX700.

Weight is not an issue when it all it takes is a small movement and you glide accross the surface of your pad. I mean seriously the difference to me is night and day. Its a fantastic feeling being able to just move the mouse barely and flip around and snipe someone who was chasing me.

Its that good.

I never get the weight thing

people act like this mouse is moving a 11lb baby across your desk :)

I bought the MX1000 a few days ago... I find it to be almost TOO powerful, when I played CS for the first time with it, I had to turn the sensitivity down to .5 or so... but I have acceleration completely disabled. I'll try turning it on and see what happens.

I upgraded to the MX1000 from an Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, and the difference is stunning. Its reeealy smooth and tracks perfectly, even though it is a little heavy.

turning On the Acceleration is not a good idea, atleast on my case. its too sensitive, i had to adjust the sensitivity to low, and i mean low. the weight thing is never an issue for me, i love it.

sounds really good, i too have a 510 but sadly im not one who can justify spending $80 on a mouse with my system the way it is. by the way what mouse pad are u using?

The MX1000 is a great mouse. Great for pretty much everything, including the most rapid of FPS's.

You've said that you a have a metal pad, do you have one of the Steelpads or something else?

It remains to be seen if the lag issue is a design problem or only affects some mice. Over on 3DGPU there are 40 pages of posts talking about the issue, it might be worthwhile to check out.

Either way, in case anyone doesn't know, if you're gaming with the MX1000 and you lift your mouse up to recenter it, when it comes back down to the surface it will lag for about 0.1 or 0.2 seconds. Many have called Logitech and they are pretty much ignoring this problem. It makes gaming very difficult on the MX1000 if you have the problem.

Look I don't represent Logitech but as my review states I am a hardcore mouser. I have spent as much on mice as some folks have spent on their damn pcs lol. And I haven't had any of the lag issues that some folks are talking about. I pick up the mouse and put it down and it instantly just continues working. As far as picking it up I don't need to. Its such a smooth control I just glide the mouse around. No need to be lifting. I mean seriously What are these folks doing? Slamming it down or something?

Could you post a link to these posts? I would love to read them to get a clearer picture. Because I haven't encountered one problem so far.

(wild guess?) I'd assume it has something to do with the fact that the laser is being reflected and read at an angle, which would mean that the laser has an extremely small window of distance in which it's able to track with. Where as with optical mice, the sensor is in fact scanning straight down, which gives it the ability to have a larger window of distance for it to be able to scan and receive information from the surface (depending on how much light the LED is giving off.)

So for those who are constantly lifting and moving their mice in the heat of battle, they may be used to having some control whilst their mice are still slightly, 1/4"-1/8" or so, above the pad. (This mimics how ball mice behave as well.)

I don't have an mx1000, so I can't test this really, but how far off the pad is it able to continue tracking?

http://3dgpu.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=310

On this thread there are 861 posts of people talking about the MX1000, and the delay issue is discussed starting a few pages into them.

This is the video of the MX700 doing the test (no problems)
http://3dgpu.com/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=77

This is the MX1000 (big problems)
http://3dgpu.com/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=76

It looks like he's beating up his mouse horribly, but the laser isn't doing this becuase of the pounding, it's because there's a tracking problem. So, don't try that argument :)

I'll explain - when the mouse is raised more than about 3 mm above the surface it stops tracking. We figure this is either the limitation of the laser, or the power saving mode turning on. When you set the mouse back down, either because of the laser or power saving mode, it takes about 0.1 to 0.2 seconds for the mouse to respond again. (Buttons work, just not movement).

Now, there is arguement over if this issue affects every MX1000. One side says it does and some people are just too clumsy to feel it, the other says that it only affects some units. The 44 page thread got shut down over stupid flames over this, so none of that here please :) .

To answer your questions, people need to lift their mice if they want to reposition their mouse if it's too far from the center. Don't come out and say "OMG n00bz just turn yur sensitivity up like a man!" because it's not going to help.

ReubenRosa: Watch the videos and do that test, it will show you how to know if you have the problem. If not, good times, I'm glad you don't. In the video the guy looks like he's totally beating up his mouse, but he really isn't. :)

I lift my mouse in gaming to reposition and I like it a little less sensitive than others so I can aim better. That's why I'm encountering the problem. I've read through all the posts on 3DGPU if anyone has questions. I'd suggest reading it too, but if you don't want to, ask away.

AGain.. your talking to a hardcore mouser lol.

I play all types of FPS. I have lifted it and moved it
AND IT DOESN:T lag. PERIOD.

I am sorry but it annoys me to know end when someone tries to suggest I don't know how to play games with my mouse lol.

I Don't Think for one sec that Logitech Advertised taking their mice and pounding it. Heck no mouse company does! And to suggest that pounding their mouse won't affect anything is crazy!

And Yes I Did what that nucklehead in the video did And guess what?

NOTHING happened bad.

My mouse works fine no lag. And no one PLAYS FPS THAT WAY!!

Tell me what games requires that we have to skip the mouse like a damn fool off the mousepad?

I just realized something I watched the video again..

Why does the video only show the mouse and his one hand?

Ever think for one second that the person in the video could be lying?
And that they actually unplugged the mouse's base.. while doing the video?

Cause I swear its very weird how he is lifting it off quickly and it works fine
and then all of a sudden it stops working for a full 20 seconds?

Very suspicous.

Heh. Did you even read my post? Or bother to check out the links? Not to be rude, but I clearly stated that some people aren't having this problem and some are. "Watch the videos and do that test, it will show you how to know if you have the problem. If not, good times, I'm glad you don't." Not everyone is having this problem.

This is not some guy just making things up. On the 3dGPU thread there are probably 10 or 15 people reporting the same issue. I am one of those people. On the video it does look like the pounding might affect the tracking, but I can tell you that I have done the test without any pounding at all and I get more or less the same results: the quick actions in the video are to illustrate how bad it can be.

Now, we know a problem exists. That has been established. If you want to argue, read over the arguing at 3DGPU, because it's all already been said. People need to know that this issue affects some mice before they buy it, that's why I brought it up.

he's obviously a biased mx700 user, whom having spent money on a superior mx1000, wants to convince himself and everyone else that his old mouse is better, so he's made a video and cheated the testing.

It is an issue for us Ultra low sensitivity players. My fingers hurt after several hours of gaming with my MX700 from moving it side to side so fast and at such great distance. The lower your sensitivity the greater your acuracy. I prefer my modded MX510 with the weight removed. I do hate the cord but the MX510 does have better response time and is noticeably smoother. I would like to try the MX1000 still but is it really heavier than the MX700?

:( I just hope you're not serious...many people have come forward with this problem. It's ridiculous to say that it's just a jealous user making this up.

the MX700 receiver works with the MX1000. so if you have the MX Duo the keyboard and MX1000 will work together. I'm running my MX1000 on my Duo reviever so my keybaord works. It even charges it.

Calling him a "jealous user" would be giving him far too much credit, as he's obviously spent the money to buy the mouse in the first place, so there's absolutely no reason I can think of why anyone would want to stage such a video to make it look bad. As was my original point (in sarcasm). :)

I still don't trust the video. A video showing him using the mouse in a way no normal gamer does , doesn't make his assertions correct and the fact you don't see his receiver and the rest of his screen can lead anyone to make the statement I did.

As far as going through the trouble.. um please its not difficult to make a video of one playing with the mouse on the screen and still showing the reciever and both hands. Anyone with a half decent Digital Camera could do it.

There is no reason for him to fake the video. I and people I know play WITHOUT accel. And with a lower sensitivity. So we can actualy accurately aim. We don't put on full accel and super high sensitivity and spin around like a nutball relying on luck. Now, reguardless of what you think . People do lift the mouse to reposition, etc. And if their sensitivity is low... like mine is.... then sometimes you may not be able to spin around completely or get your cross hair where you need it to be without lifting the mouse and setting it back down. The guy in the video was exagerating to an extent but just to show you the mouses lack of response when lifting and setting it back down like 10's of thousands.. neigh.... millions of gamers do.

Maybe people with insanely high sensitivitys and accel are just the ones that don't notice it eh. Maybe those with the insanely high sensitivitys dont' react the same as when its set low. Who knows.. I don't.

Exactly. Though, there's no need to call those with high sensitivity "nutballs" because that just encourages arguing. I recreated the video, and while you're right that this doesn't happen exactly in games, it's an example of what happens. It would be much harder to show on video what happens during actual gaming, but you can still feel it in gaming.

That's the video, seems to work well with Windows Media Player. The quality isn't great, but it does show the same results.

EDIT: I was holding my webcam with my left hand, but if we're going to consider that I might actually unplug the base, I could have a friend unplug it as I'm doing the test. I did the test, moved normally, and then tested again to show that's not the case.

Obviously no one uses a mouse in that specific way, the test seems to have been made to give a clear comparison to the mx700 used, and to show that the delay is in fact real, and not something someone dreamed up. Assuming one's MX1000 features the same drawbacks as the mouse in that video, it would certainly be noticeable to anyone whom has to reposition their mouse a lot while playing (especially those whom play fast paced games with low senstivity.)

As far as going through the trouble.. um please its not difficult to make a video of one playing with the mouse on the screen and still showing the reciever and both hands. Anyone with a half decent Digital Camera could do it.

Probably because he was showing a simple demonstration on how the mouse behaves, and wasn't expecting people to cry foul over something so inconsequential? Why would someone have an agenda to fake this? It's not even like he's comparing mice from a different company, it's just 2 logitech models. And supposing another video surfaces where both hands are shown, plus the receiver.. will you then say that a 2nd shooter.. er.. person could be unplugging the USB connection off camera?

good lord

The problem SHOULD be apparent in every mouse. Theres no doubt this mouse tracks better than ANY mouse on the market, however this delay is Logitech trying to be "responsible" to save face. If any of you ever noticed, you can't pick up the mouse and look at the laser. Why? Because the laser shuts off IMMEDIATELY after you lift the mouse off a surface. It then turns back on when it comes back in contact with a surface. Thats where the delay comes in, processing the information and waiting for contact. I would much rather the laser me on 24/7. A simple warning will save them a lawsuit and darwinism will take care of the rest.

Some Mx1000's are defective. Why don't you guys RMA them?

I don't know if Logitech is granting RMA's because they aren't classifying this as a problem that can be fixed. Also, it is not clear if this is a product-wide problem or just a small batch. Some swear that the problem does not exist on their mice.

I don't know, maybe I'll try the RMA route and see how things go.

This is the most intelligent post in the entire thread. Now someone just needs to hack the damn mouse in such a way the laser will stay on constantly. Anyone willing to break their $80 mouse? :D

I've suggested this update (maybe a firmware update would do it?) to them on email and through phone, but haven't gotten a good response. Maybe they're working on it?

Has anyone heard anything about Logitech bundling the MX1000 with a keyboard yet?

I have wanted to go the wireless keyboard and mouse route for a while but lack the conviction to replace my Dell Quiet Keyboard and Logitech MX300. They work fine for 3D animation (painting custom textures included), so replacement at the moment is more vanity than true need. I certaintly have my vanities, and I do like new toys.

I've always held to the idea "It's the artist and not the tools." If you have the talent and drive it will show through whatever the limitations. Once you are willing to work with whatever you have, then removing limitations will only make the process easier and the result better.

Hmmm... thinking about all this now... maybe I should just save my money and buy a nice tablet instead... I guess now my question is, should I spend my money on a wireless keyboard and mouse or a tablet?.. but this is not the place for that, I'll ask in a new thread.

Getting away from the arguing, I have some questions about the MX1000 vs MX700.

I'm a sniper. I play CoD from time to time, but sniping is where I notice the problem with the MX700. When I'm looking at a spot and not moving the mouse for 5-10 seconds, it takes a certain distance before the mouse "wakes up." I was wondering if this is something that they have fixed with the MX1000 or if I should just get a MX510 because this is a powersaving issue and not a problem with the MX510.

Any advice/help would be great.

Wired version, please.

I second that idea.

I have a 510 and am extremely interested in when Logitech is going to port this marvelous new LASER technology to a corded version. It's not a matter of weight or size that I'm concerned about but rather trust that the device is ALWAYS going to perform correctly and consistently. I'd rather not have to worry about the device signaling correctly to the base station or lagging AT ALL. With a cord there's just much less to worry about and I'd rather KNOW that there will be no signaling issues than WONDER if some quirky lack of responsiveness is due to a spotty wireless signal. I realize that with the MX700 and MX1000 they have greatly reduced any issues like this but I still prefer a wired mouse to a wireless one anyway. I got my fiancee a MX700 and she loves it, but she's not a gamer. I have fooled around with the MX700 and it's a fine mouse but I'd still rather have a MX1000 corded version when and if they come out.

I'm sorry if this has already been posted, but it could be that your mouse was smoother just because the pads on the bottom were brand new. They wear down/get gunked up pretty quickly and this probably happens even more because you use a metal mousepad.

But other than that one minor complaint good review.
