I just picked up a classic macbook pro 13" (my first apple product). I have an iphone and ipad, but my main rig has always been a windows box that I've built, so I am unfamiliar with software for use on the macbook. What are some must have apps? Is there anything to use for monitoring temps and what antivirus/antimalware should I be running?

smcFanControl lets you set manual speeds if you like, iStat pro lets you monitor the all temps of your system.

for quick searches, Alfred makes Finder a breeze to use, and I think it should be a requirement. It certainly beats the default Finder.

Same with TotalFinder which I think should be a requirement for all Mac users. Not sure why OSX doesn't have it built in, but it is worth the price of admission as it allows Finder to work in a tabbed mode for browsing system files.

Dropbox/Evernote, if you have it.

as for antivirus/malware haven't ever needed one, though someone else might be able to give you a hand with that.

Cookie, which gives a ridiculous amount of fine grain control over cookies stored in Safari.
Transmission for torrents.
VLC for watching video.
TRIM Enabler, since I use a 3rd party SSD.
Tweetbot for obvious reasons.
Adium for multi-client IM.
Steam for obvious reasons.

Disk Inventory X is an awesome little app that will scan your HDD and draw a visual map of all your files, so you can see what's taking up massive amounts of space.
