Have a P4P800... 2.8C on the way... hoping to make ~3.4 with a SP-94/92mm Enermax fan... is Mushkin PC3500 Level II at 2-2-2 safe or should I go with Corsair XMS PC4000 even though it has a higher CAS latency?

Oh for the days when search used to work... no asking questions that have (probably) been answered before:D

Everyone seems to like both Corsair and Mushkin, with the majority going to Corsair.
 
Wow dude, you saved me from making a thread on the exact same topic. As soon as I get back from vacation, which I leave for in a couple of weeks, I'm gonna order my new system. I'm most likely getting a IC7-Max2 and a 2.8C, with hopes of pushing it to 3.2GHz. My head is spinning from all of the RAM choices from each brand. Anyone care to sort out which is best for our purposes?
 
Had my Corsair for years, I'll never trust another ram company like I trust Corsair.
 
I might as well as here. Price is not an issue ok.

4x256 Corsair XMS 3200
2x512 Corsair XMS 3200

Which do you reccomend? Future upgrading is also not an issue, I'll just toss out the old stuff for DDR-II. So which will yield better performance?

2x512 - higher future resale value. aAthough 4x256 would be mildly faster at stock, it would greatly limit your overclocking chances because all you'd need is one bad stick out of four to mess you up.
 
2x512 is better, and the whole future upgrading thing? You'd just be throwing out your mobo and RAM (and probably the CPU too) anyways for DDR-II (since it's not supposed to work in current DIMM slots).

I'm getting a LGA 3.6E on an Alderwood mainboard, hence why I said I'd just toss out the old stuff.

I think I'll go with the 4x256 then if it provides superior preformance.
 
mushkin all the way. never used corsair so i'm biased but muskin has great products and great service. Tech support knows their stuff

Right now my timings are 1.5,2,2,5 with a fsb overclock - I haven't had timing issues with xms series while overclocking.

Tighter timing on Mushkin ram, than Corsair.

Don't get me wrong. Corsair is great, I have both. Just Mushkin as tighter timing settings.:D
 
On 865 chipset motherboards the ideal configuartion is suppost to be 2 DIMM's. 4 DIMM's on the 875 chipset is suppost to be the best but thats arguable. 2x512MB sticks are the best sizes to buy for any setup right now.

Mushkin is the best because they have always been the best. They make the best PCB's in the bussiness and they have the highest customer rating out of anyone. Corsair is great RAM but Mushkin is a little better.

You dont need PC4000 though. Thats just a waste of money. PC3200 or PC3500 will do all anyone needs it to. Just learn what those little things called dividers are :). Timings are more important than bandwidth.

How in the hell did you get your CAS set at 1.5 stable lol?
 
I didn't even realize it was a possible setting in my bios for a little while (didn't look, assuming 2 was best). Default was set to 2,3,3,6 if I remember correctly - and I changed it to 2,2,2,5 almost as soon as it was put together. I was right around 3ghz stable with those timings (with a "B" proc).
One day I was messing around and saw that option, dropped my fsb and tried it. No problems, so I started bumping up the fsb in small increments with stock voltage. Now, with 1.5,2,2,5 - I am stable at around 2.8.
I didn't do anything special, except luck out with an awesome mobo and ram. :cool:
 
Well first off you definitately have BH-5 chips on the RAM which you probably wont find on Corsair any more. I dont know if Corsair has plans to start using BH-6 like Mushkin or not but for the most part they use CH-5 which has a stable setting of 2-3-2-5.

Have you run memtest thoroughly for about 24 hours? I just dont hear of many people able to run their RAM stable and overclocked with a 1.5 CAS. In fact i thought anything lower then 2 was impossible with current DIMMs.
 
I ran prime when I first built it, and I fold for the [H]orde on that comp 24/7 - but I never ran memtest ( haven't used or installed a floppy drive in almost 2 years ).
Plus I never had any memory errors or any other problems whatsoever with the comp. When I tried to go too high with the fsb it wouldn't boot - so I settled at where it is now.

Prime95 is for testing overall system stability and the CPU. Memtest86 is for the memory. If you havn't run Memtest86 then i would suggest you do so cause errors are normally not something you visibly see unless the RAM is really pukeing them out. It will just corrupt your hard drives data :).

I will grab that Ultimate Boot CD when I get a chance ( it has memtest if I recall correctly ), and let you know how it does. ;)

Hey im interested in finding out how it does cause most people dont even try to run their RAM at 1.5-2-2-5 :).
 
lol, I didn't know I wasn't supposed to. I figured it wouldn't let me if it didn't want it.
It sure let me know when I went too high with the fsb - stupid talking bios scared the hell out of me when it rebooted and reset to all default values ( I disabled that annoying feature a long time ago , so it was forgotten ).
