OK... I am building my first computer. I'll use it for gaming and for general school stuff. So far I have a DFI Lan Party NFII Ultra B mobo, an Athlon 3200+ (have case and power supply too). My next purchase is memory and I was wondering if there is any noticeable different between the three types of Mushkin memory that newegg sells.

I've seen a lot of people recommend the lvl 1, but I was wondering how much difference there is in performance between the $205 and $245. I am a student on a budget, but if it is worth it I will buy the more expensive stuff. Is it worth the extra money?
 
2.5-4-4 are pretty sucky timings. Granted, the timings themselves don't change performance *too* much, but they are a good indicator of how much overclocking headroom you have. If the manufacturer had to loosen the timings that much in order to make them run at 400FSB, it (probably) doesn't have too much headroom left.

Basically, if you plan on doing any major overclocking, splurge on the second set. If you plan on running it stock, you can stick with the first.
 
The memories use different types of chips, different timings, and have different overclocking potential, like jagec says.

If you won't be overclocking much or at all, get the Blue Line RAM and save $40.

If you want overclocking performance RAM and tight timings (which boost performance slightly; it's probably more pronounced in Athlon systems), then get the Special 2-2-2.

How is Level I more expensive than Special 2-2-2 right now...
 
lol...dunno but my pair of 222 should be here tomorrow (i couldnt pass a good deal like this up).

what sucks is that I just got to wait till may to build my new rig.

I have that and I love it! I notice a difference in UT2k4 and Far Cry :) As well as boot up times
 
I got my Mushkin 1GB PC3200 lvl 1 kit from Newegg a week ago for just $203 lol. RAM prices have skyrocketed for some reason. I would go with the lvl 1 or lvl 2 though even though its more money. It will overclock better and run much tighter timings.
 
Tell me about the price jump. Right after you told me to get the Mushkin, I looked at the egg and saw the prices. WTF, burnin said it was $203. :eek: Now look at it. Guess I need to work a few hours of overtime to get the good stuff.
