Multiple Videocard Question

Hello I currently have a 9800 GX2 folding away at 12k PPD. After seeing the pathetic amount of folding my CPU does I want to get a few more video cards to fold. I can do this correct? For my GX2 I had to enable the extend monitor in the display properties would I need to do the same for the new video card?

If I get another GX2 or a 8800 GT then my folding would go up to 17k day which would be awesome!
 
Yep, you can do this no problem. There's a couple of multi 9800GX2 setups run by members (building one myself). Just be careful of mixing differing vid cards. Some don't play well together. One of the cards will run at reduced PPD. If you keep all of them the same, this isn't a problem.

I currently have a quad 9800GT rig running also...

Oh ok. I don't know if i should pick up another 9800 GX2. The power requirements might scare me and the heat...
 
Isn't there someone running a 9800GX2 and a single 8800GT on this team? I believe they didn't see reduced output from either card unless I'm mistaken.

However 9800GX2 is way more "D" than a 8800GT :D

 
That would make sense. Isn't the 9800GX2 basically 2 8800GTs bolted together? Or is it 9800 GT's? Too many different nVidia GPUs to keep track of.

If that's the case, you really wouldn't be mixing different cores...

Very true, but on some motherboards such as one I have, you can't get any more production because the slots are adjacent to each other and the GX2s are double-slot.

Yes, it would make sense to combine these two particular cards in such a scenario because they essentially have the same GPU.

Sad to say, but the bug that causes different gpu's is a YMMV theme. It is best to try and keep same shader counts and personally I would recommend an 8800gts if you are concerned about power issues. The thing to remember is just because one person can be successful with a gx2 and 8800gt combo does not mean you can do this. Not even if your setups are (almost the same). Regardless of what you decide to try, you would be well advised to wait until this server hiccup and core issue are resolved. That is just my opinion. Good Luck on whichever way you go.

My motherboard has 4 pcie 16x slots (some might go to 8x whatever) so currently I have two or three slots free. Currently power isn't an issue but it will be in less then a year. Heat is an issue. Our air conditioner is pretty much at capacity (*sigh* don't make me do a heat balance) right now so adding one card would be better then adding another 9800 gx2 though I could raise the funds to add either one. My power supply is also quadfire certified too. I could pick up a 9800 GTX+ for about $90 on ebay but if I can't mix cores I'll get a 8800 GT.

The 9800 GX2 has 256 shaders while one 8800 GT has 112 shaders.

Why? If the GX2 has more shaders per GPU, and pairing it with a GT having slightly less shaders possibly causing your setup to incur the PPD drop due to dissimilar architectures.
 
I tried running a 8800GTX and 9800GT and the 9800GT suffered lower ppd. That I could have lived with. The constant EUEs caused me to pull the 8800GTX since it was the higher power user, (higher ppd also :( ).

Ah so I guess the most stable and the best performing option would be to throw another 9800 gx2 in? Hmmm guess i'll need to start saving up. On the plus side I shouldn't need to turn on the heat in my room this year.

Do you guys think a PC Power and Cooling 750W PSU would be able to power 2 9800 GX2's , two northbridges, and two opteron 55W quad cores?

Definitely. Also, eVGA was selling their B-stock 9800GX2s for $230 apiece, so that would be a good option for if/when you add a second one if they have any available :).
