Is there any disadvantage to using multiple switches "dasiy chained"
I'm planning on running some ethernet in my house and instead of doing 8 runs from the main switch to my study, thinking of just doing 1 and putting in a second switch in that room

Yes, all devices between switch A and switch B will be limited/sharing the link speed between these switches.

Two down sides:

A break in the chain effects all down stream devices and as diizzy said: You're limited to the throughput of the upstream device.

But if you don't think you'll be saturating the link very often then it's not a big deal, also if your switches support it you can do LACP links between the switches to increase the throughput. If you're just trying to lessen the number of runs you need to do then maybe a bundle w/LACP is better but it's up to you.
 
Will the devices behind the secondary switch ever fight for bandwidth if they all share 1GbE pipe to the rest of the network? Most likely not, especially in a home, but that's the biggest question. The rest of the stuff above is nit-pick stuff.
 
Besides the possible bottleneck for traffic going outside the second switch (most likely routing/Internet) it shouldn't be too bad. Then again there would be other factors that would hamper that (router/Internet speed) anyways. If this is just your way of going the easiest route to getting all your devices hard line connected for a home environment, then I don't think it would be too much concern. It isn't ideal in a perfect world, but that's the beauty of networking. It all depends on the needs of the individual.

and I would hit my internet speed max WAY before I saturate gigabit ethernet

basically I'm just looking to save some money. the people that do the wiring charge $45/drop so it starts to add up if I want several drops in each room. that's why I'm thinking of just doing 1-2 drops per room and adding a cheap switch in those rooms

my main concern is I don't want any lag or anything that could hurt online gaming

I may be wrong (I'm not in IT) but my understanding, and very basic explanation, is a drop is the location you want the wallplate. This is different than the number of lines/ports going to each wallplate.

If my understanding is correct, then you would just be adding additional ports to the drop, which shouldn't cost much more since cable is cheap and the labor is only ever so slightly increased.

Back to your question, it would really depend on the bandwidth you will be using while gaming/streaming/etc. Say you have Main Switch and Room Switch. In the most simplistic of scenarios, you have one ethernet cable connecting Main Switch to Room Switch with x number of devices connected to Room Switch. All devices connected to Room Switch, if they need to reach devices not attached directly to Room Switch, will be confined to the link speed between Room Switch and Main Switch.

If you are only browsing/gaming, you likely won't be affected by this. However, if you are moving a large file from a computer connected to Room Switch to another computer connected to Main Switch, you may run into some issues.

Latency will not be an issue, you can run small businesses off daisy chained switches and not see any problems.

I wouldn't worry about it OP.
