I'm pretty new to distributed computing, and I'm wondering about taking apart some old laptops to run them together in parallel to get some good processing power instead of just throwing away old parts.

Is it possible to connect the machines in such a way that they use one interface and only need one operating system.

I think I have a spare 32bit vista, but I'm guessing I'd have ram problems so it would be better if both could just run the same 64bit os. Also, I don't want to be able to use them separately so it would be very convenient if I could focus all the power to one interface.

I also don't know a whole lot about raid, but maybe to make the operating system interface properly would I have to do something like a RAID setup between the different hard drives?
 
To do something like that, you'd have to build a Linux cluster.
But to do that all the boards must be able to boot from the lan network.
The order is boot over the network, build a ram drive, install os on ram drive, run the client on each node.

But folding will not gain any from being run on a cluster as each standard work-unit cannot be split into smaller packet.
And the inter-node connections are to slow to run a SMP client on.

So its a nice idea but you'll get no gain from it.

I always thought of having my own cluster farm but knowing my luck it would turn into one big cluster f**k :D
 
I don't mind about not gaining so much as not losing. These are old machines I just want to do something with. It'll be bootable right? Will I at least have the power of the two machines separate?
 
The way the projects are now, if you cant run the smp client or have an 8XXX series graphics card....theres not much point in attempting this. Maybe they could run the other distributed project?
