Multiple monitors with 1 card

It's been a while since I've dealt with more than 2 monitors, since it never really worked in the past for me. I was wondering if things have changed or if there are still certain requirements to get 3 monitors to work on a single card. My HD 7950 only works with 2 monitors and then needs an active displayport to dvi/hdmi adapter for the third one, but I don't really feel like wasting money on one of those adapters. Do newer GPU's (GTX 9xx/10xx or R9 3xx/RX 480) support 3 monitors without the need of an active adapter?

Right now I'm just going to connect one of the displays to the HDMI port on my motherboard and use the iGPU. 2 of the 3 monitors are only for extra space, only one is used for gaming.

Seems Nvidia has supported 3 monitors for a while now without any special adapters, nice. Plus the new AMD CCC is completely useless, so I guess that makes my next GPU choice much easier. Thanks for the link!

I still run an AMD HD6950 with 3 monitors. Two on DP and one on HDMI. However, all of my monitors have DP ports. I don't use any adapters. I also have a HD6450 that runs three screens. One VGA, one DVI and one HDMI. Zero adapters.

I have GTX 1080 and am running 3x 1440P DisplayPort monitors, plus an Oculus Rift, all on one card.

In my main system, I have a GTX 1080 running a 4K display over DP and two 1080p displays over HDMI, and a GTX 970 running two 1440p displays over HDMI and DP. For awhile I was running just the 4K off the GTX 1080 and all the others off the GTX 970. I don't use surround, which can only merge similar displays anyway, I just let Windows 10 manage all the monitors. Games run in the primary 4K monitor.

I'll probably replace the GTX 970 with a GTX 1060 soon - the GTX 970 is generating more heat in the case at idle than I would like. When I do that, I may run all four of the 1080/1440 monitors off the GTX 1060 and leave the GTX 1080 driving just the 4K display.

So at least for GTX 970 and up, four displays is no problem.
