until today i had the geforce mx440 as my main card, with an old ass diamond PC 2 meg PCI for my secondary monitor -- just enough to do aol on a side screen.

today i bought a gforce fx 5500 to replace the mx440 since friggin evercrack wont work with the mx series shit cards.

the gforce lets me do two monitors off one card, but here is an interesting problem.

BEFORE i had 2 s3 cards and an agp nvidia, the second s3 card would NEVER work in this pc, but would work fine as a stand alone

now with the gforce 5500 i have two screens running off that card and BOTH s3 cards say theyre inoperative but wont tell me why.

is there some fundamental limit in XP that disallows the use of 3 or more monitors at a crack? i thought it was supposed to support like 16 on its own. anyone got 3+ care to share what hardware its on?
 
I don't know what your problem is but this thread has someone getting a 9700 Pro and a PCI 9250 running with four monitors. Windows has been okay with lots of monitors since way back when. It must be something else.
 
If you got an old S3 to get along with your GeForce MX440, then it seems like it should get along with an FX5500. I've tried various combinations of a Radeon 9700 Pro AGP, a GeForce2 MX AGP, a PCI GeForce4 MX, and a PCI Radeon 7200 and I've never found a combination which didn't work. Of course, neither of my PCI boards are as old as your S3. I always thought the way it worked was either the display driver supported multiple monitors or it didn't and your S3 apparently does.
 
i just find it puzzling that two cards the work perfectly fine by themselves

a. wont work in tandem with an agp card
b. neither will work with a dual display agp card.

i wonder if it has anything to do with the agp card grabbing up irqs they need? but windows doesnt give an irq fault, just says they wont work.

interestingly when i had bios defaulting to the s3 card windows was running EXTREMELY slow, if i disabled the new card it would run fine and dandy. i went to bios and set the primary to the new agp and the problem went away, but so did the display on the s3...

perhaps the display driver itself can only support two? or the video chipset on the s3 is limiting it. i think i got this thing when i still had win95.
