Multiple Hard Disk Activity LED's?

is it possible to have more than 1 HD activity LED? not like in a string or whatever, i mean like 1 for each Hard drive? If so, where would they connect?

Pin 39 on the IDE data connector is for the activity LED. You may need an optoisolator and additional circuitry to supply adequate current, so do some experimenting.

You could in theory do it, it would just be a huge pain in the ass

Well, you could buy hotswap enclosures for your drives, since they usually feature activity LEDs for each drive. It wouldn't be a true hotswap solution (no IDE drives are), but it would meet your LED needs without any soldering or handiwork.

It is possible, I believe ZapWizard over at BitTech did it. It used Pin39 on each of hte IDE connectors, but other than that I don't remember the details.

I think i remeber something like this before the forums went down. it had inputs for like 3 hdd and out for 3 led's. does anybody know if this is possible with sata

Heh, I don't think he is being mysterious - looks to me like a little in-line board and I would guess "email for more info" is "I'll tell you how much I want for them". Subtle enough to not get flack from the Mods for advertising in a non-selling forum

Something like that, I don't wanna step on your toes so delete it if you must. I thought it would be okay since it was in response to a question.

More Info: plugs inline with existing hd, will work with ata133 drives. It does disconnect the activity light from the motherboard so the hd led off the motherboard will not show activity for that drive. It has leds for activity (read or write), just read, just write and 3 2pin connectors for the same three functions.

all you have to do is cut pin #39, put an led on pin 39 coming from the hd, and put a diode and put it back onto the bus

My Antec case has three HDD leds on the front.. would be nice to use em.

You can tap the activity indicator from the Serial ATA controller chip on the hard drive, or on the motherboard (if the chip isn't in a BGA package). You'll have to check the pin diagram by referencing the Serial ATA controller datasheet. I wish I knew of a more elegant way to accomplish this, but I don't.

Yeah, simply not worth the effort. Now if someone comes up with a device that connects inline somehow along the SATA connector, I might buy a few, assuming they aint more than $10 a piece.

I'm too lazy and value my time too much to figure it out myself, that and I really don't know how for sure and don't care to figure out. If they aren't too expensive, the menial amount of $$ isn't an issue.
