So basically, my two 280s run idle at 44/49 C. Ignoring the fact that those temperatures are nothing to worry about is it possible to do the following:

Turn one video card off (ie stop giving it power) through some type of software?

All I do all day is watch movies and play TF2 so the majority of the time I dont need to have both of them running. Is there such software that would allow such a thing as I do not want to manually open it up and unplug it every time I want to switch.

Just disable SLI. As for power consumption, they draw very very little power when they are not in their 3d modes.

Its not on SLI but the video card is still running.

Lets ignore all logic though to whether or not this should be done, such as temperature, power draw, whether or not it makes any difference, etc.

The card should run at a slow fan speed as it is not getting stressed right?

Yea, its doing that. I just want an option in some software to turn it off entirely, meaning no power even going to it.

I dont know man.I would think with it throttling down itself should be fine

This. Currently, there is no way to shut off the PCI-E port power completely. When the card is not in use, it should be using very little power and the fan will run at a very low speed. The heat output will still be there, but should stay fairly cool.

If all else fails, you could just remove it until you need it, though this method is kind of a PIA. ;)
